For some retailers that rely on emailed promotions, Google Inc. is adding insult to injury. When the search giant overhauled its free email service three months ago, it set up algorithms to automatically siphon the flow of airfare offers and spa deals away from users#39; main inboxes and into an easily bypassed #39;Promotions#39; folder. But there is another wrinkle: For Gmail users that do visit those Promotions folders, the first items they see will often be ads sold by Google. The ads are different from those that aly appear inside users#39; opened messages. Instead, they look like emails sitting in an inbox but are shaded yellow and feature informational #39;i#39; icons explaining their purpose. Marketers still complain that the ads threaten to draw attention away from the coupons and pitch emails they want their targets to first. #39;People are not very amused by those,#39; said Tom Monaghan, product manager for the email service at marketing service HubSpot Inc. Google shows no more than two inbox ads per user, spokeswoman Andrea Freund said. Some users#39; inboxes showed no ads after Google tightened its #39;quality thresholds#39; for targeting the messages. #39;Our goal was to put them someplace that was more relevant, and we thought that was the promotions tab,#39; she said. #39;When you#39;re looking at promotions, you#39;re looking for deals,#39; she added. #39;We do try to clearly label them as ads.#39; If past software updates are any indication, Google will likely t carefully as it introduces the new inbox ads, according to Ben Chestnut, chief executive of email marketing service MailChimp. Too many ads could alienate users, he said. The ads are compounding the concern over the changes to Gmail, which has more than 425 million active users and a significant chunk of the world#39;s free email accounts, according to market researcher comScore. Though Gmail users can#39;t see the changes when accessing their messages on iPhones, Google#39;s Web mail application is widely used on desktops. Ms. Freund said more than half of all users have the updated Gmail layout, which the company has been gradually rolling out since May. Prolific emailers like Delta Air Lines Inc., Gap Inc., Gilt Groupe Inc. and Groupon Inc. have sent step-by-step instructions to their mailing lists on how to move messages out of the Promotions tab and back to Gmail#39;s #39;Primary#39; folder. Marketers fear the new system could sp and put an unwanted kink in a tried-and-true method of driving sales, not to mention business models that rely on emailed coupons. Google redesigned its service to help users manage email overload, Ms. Freund said. Users can reroute emails they want to land in their regular inbox with a simple drag-and-drop, or by going back to the old layout altogether. The shift appears to have made a noticeable but small impact on the rate at which recipients open marketers#39; pitches. MailChimp last month found the percentage of emails that were opened by its 3 million customers fell by about 1 percentage point for Gmail, to between 12% and 13%. 12%-13%。 Analysis from HubSpot showed the percentage of Gmail users who opened clients#39; emails slid slightly over the summer, though activity spiked during the weekends. Open rates have declined at the same slow rate since April, suggesting user engagement is suffering from too many emails rather than Gmail. #39;There#39;s a little bit of Chicken Little happening right now over this,#39; Mr. Monaghan said. /201308/252946Earlier this month, Bill Gates got emotional talking about Steve Jobs. ;He and I, in a sense, grew up together,; Gates said. ;We were within a year of the same age, and we were kind of naively optimistic and built big companies. And every fantasy we had about creating products and learning new things — we achieved all of it. And most of it as rivals. But we always retained a certain respect and communication, including even when he was sick.;“我和他,在某种意义上,是一起成长的,”盖茨说。 There#39;s no relationship in history like that of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. As partners and rivals, they built the personal computing industry with two totally different styles. Jobs was a working-class kid from California who believed in tight control over all products, and put a premium on design. Bill Gates was an upper class kid from Washington who believed in open products, and didn#39;t worry too much about great design. ;Each one thought he was smarter than the other one, but Steve generally treated Bill as someone who was slightly inferior, especially in matters of taste and style,; said early Macintosh employee Andy Hertzfield in Walter Isaacson#39;s Steve Jobs bio. He added, ;Bill looked down on Steve because he couldn’t actually program.;“所有人都认为史蒂夫比比尔更聪明些,不过史蒂夫仅认为比尔在品味和风格方面略逊一筹,” Mac团队早期队员Andy Hertzfeld在沃尔特#8226;艾萨克森的《乔布斯传》中表示,他补充道,“比尔也瞧不起史蒂夫,因为乔布斯自己不会编程。”Gates e inspired us to take a look back at some of the best es from Gates and Jobs about each other in Isaacson#39;s book to get a deeper sense of what the men really thought of each other. /201305/241738The drones are coming, according to the world#39;s largest unmanned systems industry organization. And they are likely to bring high-tech jobs, millions in tax revenues, and tens of billions in economic impact with them. A report released today by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) forecasts that if the Federal Aviation Administration meets its 2015 deadline for integrating unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) into the national civilian airspace, the total domestic economic impact will reach more than .1 billion between 2015 and 2025 -- creating more than 100,000 high-paying jobs in the process. In the near term, says AUVSI, the outlook appears even rosier. More than 70,000 of the total 103,776 new jobs forecast nationally by 2025 will be created in just the first three years after airspace integration is completed, along with .6 billion in overall economic impact in the same span. Meanwhile states where the UAS industry is strongest will begin collecting what will eventually amount to 2 million in tax revenue in the decade following full airspace integration.AUVSI称,从近期看,前景似乎更为美妙。 That#39;s assuming integration happens at all. Under the 2012 FAA Reauthorization Act, Congress ordered aviation authorities to develop a regulatory framework for the testing and licensing of commercial drones by 2015, a deadline that the FAA may not meet. The process of naming six federally approved UAS testing sites necessary for developing the kinds of technologies that will enable safe airspace integration was delayed indefinitely last year while the agency dealt with various public privacy concerns (the process resumed last month), and a variety of critical technical problems -- not least of which involve ;sense and avoid; technologies, which allow unmanned systems to maintain safe distances between each other as well as manned aircraft -- have yet to be resolved. For every year the FAA delays the integration of UAS into the national airspace, the economy loses billion in potential economic gain, the report claims, a number that#39;s not lost on states vying not only to play host to the FAA#39;s UAS test sites but also to woo UAS-related companies. The drone economy won#39;t be sp evenly; the AUVSI report names California, Washington, Texas, Florida, and Arizona as the states most likely to reap the economic rewards of a domestic drone boom. Other states are scrambling to capture a piece of the industry as well. Oklahoma has been noticeably visible at various industry trade shows of late, while Indiana and Ohio have partnered in an effort to make their shared economic region a more attractive place for the FAA to place a test site, which both states expect could generate thousands of jobs and billions in economic activity between them. Who exactly will be buying all these domestic drones? It#39;s probably not who you think. While legitimate privacy concerns surround the proliferation of small UAS in the civilian airspace, sales of small surveillance drones to state and local authorities are only expected to make up a small portion of that spending. Agricultural applications dwarf all other categories, the AUVSI report claims, accounting for .6 billion of total national economic impacts by 2025, whereas government authorities like police, firefighters, and other first responders will generate just .2 billion. All other applications -- which range from weather and environmental monitoring, to oil and gas exploration, to aerial imaging and mapping -- will also result in a .2 billion impact over the same period. /201303/230335

Forget weeks to find a builder and months for house construction, a machine developed in the ed States can build a 232sq m home layer by layer in a single day. University of Southern California#39;s Professor Behrokh Khoshnevis has designed the giant robot that replaces construction workers with a nozzle on a gantry, this squirts out concrete and can quickly build a home according to a computer pattern. The nature of the technology means it will also be possible to create curved walls and architecture that is both ;exotic and #39;beautiful;, according to Prof Khoshnevis. As a result, it could be ideal to print out customised luxury homes. Prof Khoshnevis claims that Contour Crafting could slash the cost of homeowning, making it possible for millions of displaced people to get on the property ladder. It could even be used in disaster relief areas to build emergency and replacement housing. Furthermore, Prof Khoshnevis believes that the technology could be applied beyond our planet. ;Contour Crafting technology has the potential to build safe, reliable, and affordable lunar and Martian structures, habitats, laboratories, and other facilities before the arrival of human beings,#39; his website s. /201401/274269
