And he's had a pretty good voting record in Congress. But he looks like such a wimp: I'm afraid he doesn't have the guts to handle a real crisis when it comes up. So I guess I'll vote the other guy." Sure, he makes a good salary and treats her well. But he lets himself get pushed around by everybody--waiters, clerks in stores, the guy who pumps gas--he's afraid to stand up his rights." He never finished school, he doesn't have a job, he dresses like a bum--he looks like a real turkey to me." 这位父亲说:“我真担心我女儿的那个男朋友他书没念完,也没有工作,穿得像个叫化子我看,他真是个愚蠢的,毫无用处的人” 每个大公司或机构里总会有几个什么事也干不了的人,可是要想开除他们还不容易下面这个人说的是一些机构如何处理这些人的办法: 例句-: "Some private firms and official agencies have what they call a "turkey farm", a part of the organization where their turkeys can be sent to get them out of the way until it's possible to fire them." British Columbia British Columbia is the third largest Canadian provinces, both in area and population. It is nearly 1.5 times as large as Texas, and extends 800 miles(1,0km) north from the ed States border. It includes Canada's entire west coast and the islands just off the coast. Most of British Columbia is mountainous, with long rugged ranges running north and south. Even the coastal islands are the remains of a mountain range that existed thousands of years ago. During the last Ice Age, this range was scoured by glaciers until most of it was beneath the sea. Its peaks now show as islands scattered along the coast. The southwestern coastal region has a humid mild marine climate. Sea winds that blow inland from the west are warmed by a current of warm water that flows through the Pacific Ocean. As a result, winter temperatures average above freezing and summers are mild. These warm western winds also carry moisture from the ocean. Inland from the coast, the winds from the Pacific meet the mountain barriers of the coastal ranges and the Rocky Mountains. As they rise to cross the mountains, the winds are cooled, and their moisture begins to fall as rain. On some of the western slopes almost 0 inches (500cm) of rain fall each year. More than half of British Columbia is heavily ested. On mountain slopes that receive plentiful rainfall, huge Douglas firs rise in towering columns. These est giants often grow to be as much as 300 feet(90m) tall, with diameters up to feet(3m). More lumber is produced from these trees than from any other kind of tree in North America. Hemlock, red cedar, and balsam fir are among the other trees found in British Columbia.Work and PleasureTo be really happy and really safe, one ought to have at least two or three hobbies, and they must all be real. It is no use starting late in life to say “I will take an interest in this or that.” Such an attempt only aggravates the strain of mental eft. A man may acquire great knowledge of topics unconnected with his daily work, and yet hardly get any benefit or relief. It is no use doing what you like; you have got to like what you do. Broadly speaking, human being may be divided into three classes those who are toiled to death, those who are worried to death, and those who are bored to death. It is no use offering the manual laborer, tired out with a hard week’s sweat and eft, the chance of playing a game of football or baseball on Saturday afternoon. It is no use inviting the politician or the professional or business man, who has been working or worrying about serious things six days, to work or worry about trifling things at the weekend. It may also be said that rational, industrious, useful human beings are divided into two classes first, those whose work is work and whose pleasure is pleasure; and secondly, those whose work and pleasure are one. Of these the mer are the majority. They have their compensations. The long hours in the office or the factory bring with them as their reward, not only the means of sustenance, but a keen appetite pleasure even in its simplest and most modest ms. But tune’s favored children belong to the second class. Their life is a natural harmony. them the working hours are never long enough. Each day is a holiday, and ordinary holidays when they come are grudged as enced interruptions in an absorbing vacation. Yet to both classes the need of an alternative outlook, of a change of atmosphere, of a diversion of eft, is essential. Indeed, it may well be that those whose work is their pleasure are those who most need the means of banishing it at intervals from their minds. 678

LOL (laugh out loud), skool (school), btw (by the way), idk (I don't know), idc (I don't care)等等接下来,我们就来具体讲述三个缩略词1 TMI"TMI" ("too much inmation"), a slang expression indicating that someone has divulged too much personal inmation and made the listener uncomtable. Generally, Americans don't like to talk about the specifics of personal matters like a doctor's visit, especially when the details are disgusting! He began to talk about his last trip to the underwear store. I told him, "TMI!" Please, TMI! ASAPASAP means "as soon as possible",也就是“尽快”的意思那么为什么不说as soon as possible而说ASAP呢?If you are in a hurry, it's easier to just say ASAP. It also sounds more ceful. instance, if your boss tells you, "I need you to get this done ASAP!" you know that he is in a hurry! Write to me (or call me) ASAP!!I need to go to work ASAP, so I need to hand this in bee I go.Susan, check those figures ASAP!3 PDQPDQ stands "Pretty Darn Quick." 意思是very quickly, as quickly as possible, at once, immediately. 它用于非正式场合,意思和ASAP差不多,不过faster than ASAP如今的金融危机让许多职场人更加拼命得工作,他们的午餐eat PDQ,餐后get back to work PDQ例句:My boss assigned me a project this morning, and he really wants me to finish it PDQ.PDQ or you are late school.

Changing Roles of Public Education One of the most important social developments that helped to make possible a shift in thinking about the role of public education was the effect of the baby boom of the 1950's and 1960's on the schools. In the 19's, but especially in the Depression conditions of the 1930's, the ed States experienced a declining birth rate -- every thousand women aged fifteen to ty-four gave birth to about 8 live children in 19,89. in 1930,75.8 in 1936, and 80 in 190. With the growing prosperity brought on by the Second World War and the economic boom hat followed it young people married and established households earlier and began to raise larger families than had their predecessors during the Depression. Birth rates rose to 1 per thousand in 196, 1. in 1950, and 8 in 1955. Although economics was probably the most important determinant, it is not the only explanation the baby boom. The increased value placed on the idea of the family also helps to explain this rise in birth rates. The baby boomers began streaming into the first grade by the mid 190's and became a flood by 1950. The public school system suddenly found itself overtaxed. While the number of schoolchildren rose because of wartime and postwar conditions, these same conditions made the schools even less prepared to cope with the flood. The wartime economy meant that few new schools were built between 190 and 195. Moreover, during the war and in the boom times that followed, large numbers of teachers left their profession better-paying jobs elsewhere in the economy. Theree in the 1950's and 1960's, the baby boom hit an antiquated and inadequate school system. Consequently, the "custodial rhetoric"of the 1930's and early 190's no longer made sense that is, keeping youths aged sixteen and older out of the labor market by keeping them in school could no longer be a high priority an institution unable to find space and staff to teach younger children aged five to sixteen. With the baby boom, the focus of educators and of laymen interested in education inevitably turned toward the lower grades and back to basic academic skills and discipline. The system no longer had much interest in offering nontraditional, new, and extra services to older youths. 69

只会说“Thank you"? 以表达即将来临的周末 see yousee you later(最常用的说法); bye (不太常用); see you aroundsee you sooncatch you later(如果马上就能见到); take carebe careful(如果对方要出远门); cheers (也可以当再见用) are you alright? “i’m fine, and you?” “i’m fine too.” 这个时候你可以回答 “i’m fine i’m great,”后面一定要加一个“thanks.”如果你今天不是很好,你可以说“not too bad, could be better.”此外 “how('re) you doing today?” 应该是“can i have a cup of coffee please?” 同理问别人叫什么名字说“what’s your name?”是非常不礼貌的,尤其是对女生,一定要用“may i have your name please?” ”(很礼貌) “may i…please? ”(非常礼貌) “would you please…?” “could you please…?” “is there any chance to…?”(寻求帮助) 有次在酒吧打工,一个老外想买一杯1.5英镑的红茶,对我说:“ my apologies, would you please by any chance to accept my pathetic pound note, that’s the only one i have.” 他会说:“that’not bad.” 或“that’s a brave attempt.” 或是 “you are an idiot.” 我们听起来好像没什么太大的关系,其实他们是真的生气了 其他常用表达 厕所 toiletrestroom (不说wc); 女孩 bird chick (不说girl); 男孩 lad(不说boy); 可爱 cute(不说lovely); 黄头发 blonde(不说yellow hair); 英镑 quid(不说pound) 裤子 pantsjeans(不说trousers); 好吃 nicetasty(不说delicious); 有名 well known(不说famous); 给你 here you are(不说give you); 牛逼 sickfreaky (不说niubility); 真遗憾 it’s a shame (不说it’s a pity); 马马虎虎 that’okit’s alright( 不说 so-so) 英国人 口语 地道

A: Jean, can you bring me the newspaper?B: Sorry?(↗)Jean 用升调说 Sorry,其意思是 "I didn't hear you. Could you say that again, please?"A: Jean, can you bring me the newspaper?B: Sorry.(↙)Jean 用降调说 Sorry,显然其意思是拒绝帮助或无能为力可见,如果对语调知识缺乏了解,就会无法确定说话人的态度、感情、口吻、意图等,所以今天我们就来对语调问题做个说明吧一、一句话中音调的相对高度所包含的意义众所周知,人们在兴奋、惊讶或感情激动时说话的语调就高,而在相反的情况下,语调则低,在同一个场合中,如果一个人的语调明显高于另一个,或明显低于另一个,以此就可以推断出该说话人的意思及态度这里我们要着重谈谈一句话中语调相对高度的不同所包含的意义一句话中的语调波峰一般都是句子的重音所在,通过语调波峰,我们就可以了解说话人的意思如人们读 "I live in the city." M: Linda looked very tired these days.W: She looked OK to me(↗).Q: What does the woman think of Linda?(A) She saw Linda and me.(B) Linda said she was fine.(C) She looked up the word me.(D) She considered Linda was all right. 使用疑问词 who, which, what, how, when, where, why 的特殊疑问句可以用降调也可以用升调,但含义是不同的如:A: Mr. Smith thinks we ought to get the money in hand first.B: Who?(↗)A: Mr. Smith.B用升调说 Who,表示听不清对方谈话中的某一部分,要求对方再重复那一部分A: We'd like to have someone to say a word at the beginning to welcome the group.B: Who?(↙)A: We thought that you or Dr. Johnson might do it.B用降调说 Who,其意思是问,对方想让谁在开场时致欢迎词. A: You will finish the work, won't you?(↙)B: Yes, I will.A用降调提问,意思是:I know you will finish the work, but I want you to confirm it.A: You will finish the work, won't you?(↗)B: Yes, I will.(或 No, I won't. A: Are you Mr. Blake?B: Yes.(↙)A: Room twenty-six. A: Are you Mr. Blake?B: Yes?(↗)A: Ah, the secretary would like a word with you. But why do you ask?" 或是 "Yes. But who want to know?" M: How long shall we stay at the Grand Canyon?W: A day?(↗)Q: What does the woman mean?(A) We shall stay at the Grand Canyon one day.(B) Shall we stay at the Grand Canyon one day?(C) To stay at the Grand Canyon one day is too short.(D) To stay at the Grand Canyon one day is enough. She lent him her car.(↙)(用以陈述事实)She lent him her car?(↗)(表示惊奇、的怀疑,含有 "Did she really lend her car to him ?" M: Wasn't Sam's speech great!(↙)W: Are you serious?Q: What does the man say about Sam's speech?(A) Sam's speech wasn't great, was it?(B) Sam's speech was great, wasn't it?(C) Sam gave a serious speech.(D) Sam was not serious. W: Haven't you got anything better to do?(↗)M: Ok, Mum, I'll turn off the TV and begin to do my homework.

Wedding custom around the world (3)Belgium1):The bride may still embroider) her name on her handkerchief, carry it on the wedding day, then frame it and keep it until the next family bride marries.Bermuda3):Islanders top their tiered) wedding cakes with a tiny sapling. The newlyweds plant the tree at their home, where they can watch it grow, as their marriage grows.Bohemia5):The groom gives the bride a rosary6), a prayer book, a girdle7) with three keys(to guard her virtue), a fur cap, and a silver wedding ring. The bride gives the groom a shirt sewn with gold th blended with colored silks and a wedding ring.
