Money can buy happiness, but only if you spend it on someone else, researchers reported.Spending as little as $US5 a day on someone else could significantly boost happiness, the team at the University of British Columbia and Harvard Business School found.Their experiments on more than 630 Americans showed they were measurably happier when they spent money on others -- even if they thought spending the money on themselves would make them happier."We wanted to test our theory that how people spend their money is at least as important as how much money they earn," said Elizabeth Dunn, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia. They asked their 600 volunteers first to rate their general happiness, report their annual income and detail their monthly spending including bills, gifts for themselves, gifts for others and donations to charity."Regardless of how much income each person made, those who spent money on others reported greater happiness, while those who spent more on themselves did not," Dunn said in a statement.Dunn's team also surveyed 16 employees at a company in Boston before and after they received an annual profit-sharing bonus of between $US3000 and $US8000."Employees who devoted more of their bonus to pro-social spending experienced greater happiness after receiving the bonus, and the manner in which they spent that bonus was a more important predictor of their happiness than the size of the bonus itself," they wrote in their report, published in the journal Science. They gave their volunteers $US5 or $US20 and half got clear instructions on how to spend it. Those who spent the money on someone or something else reported feeling happier about it."These findings suggest that very minor alterations in spending allocations -- as little as $US5 -- may be enough to produce real gains in happinesson a given day," Dunn said. Overweight and obese women are less likely than normal-weight women to keepbreastfeedingtheir infants for six months or longer, a study from Australia shows. Dr. Wendy Hazel Oddy of the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research in Perth and colleagues looked at 1,803 children and their mothers participating in a large pregnancy study. Eighteen percent of the women were overweight or obese before becoming pregnant. After the researchers adjusted for factors including socioeconomic status and years of education, they found that women who were overweight or obese were less apt to attempt breastfeeding at all and those that did were less likely to continue breastfeeding.Obese women were about twice as likely to have breastfed for less than two months or less than four months, while overweight women were 52 percent more likely than normal weight women to have stopped breastfeeding before two months, and 62 percent more likely to have stopped before four months.Overall, the researchers found, overweight or obese women were 76 percent more likely to stop breastfeeding before their infants were six months old than their normal weight peers.A number of factors could help explain the findings, the investigators say. For example, excess weight may change a woman's hormonal profile, making sustainedlactationmore difficult, or it may be harder for an infant to "latch on" to breast tissue if the mother is overweight or obese. The researchers also report that overweight and obese women were more likely to have pregnancy complications andC-sectionsthan normal-weight women. Vocabulary:breastfeed: 母乳喂养lactation: 哺乳期C-sections: 剖腹产 /200803/31406Having live snails crawling on your face sounds like the thing of nightmares, but in Japan one company is hoping people will be prepared to pay for it. Starting Monday, women who want to slough off dead skin, clear their pores or roll back the years can submit themselves to five minutes of molluscs. ;Slime from snails helps remove old cells, heal the skin after sun burn and moisturise it,; said Manami Takamura, a spokeswoman for Tokyo-based beauty salon, as she placed three gastropods on a woman#39;s face. ;In this way, you can have 100 percent pure snail essence directly on the skin.; Snail slime is believed to have an anti-ageing effect on human skin, and some cosmetics are aly sold with essence of escargot. But this beauty salon is going one step further in what it says is the first live snail treatment in Japan.“这种做法可以使100%的蜗牛自然精华完全作用于皮肤。” The snails cost 10,500 yen (6). Sayaka Ito said she had found the treatment so relaxing that she had almost fallen asleep. ;You can feel the snails moving on your face. At first, it is surprising, but it#39;s actually rather nice,; she said. ;My skin really does feel smooth and moist.;她说:“你能感到蜗牛在你脸上蠕动,先开始有些害怕,但实际很舒。 /201307/248237

They may forget anniversaries and buy last minute Valentine’s gifts from petrol stations, but men are, apparently, more romantic than women. A survey found that while 48 percent have fallen in love at first sight, a mere 28 percent of women could claim the same. 28%。The research, published in new book The Normal Bar, questioned 10,000 people worldwide about their attitude towards love and relationships. Using data collected from their online survey, the book aims to dispel the myths surrounding sexuality and relationships, shed light on what a real 21st century relationship entails and help make your own relationship more satisfying. The survey, which is ongoing, contains 1,300 questions and touches on everything from sex to the most attractive physical features to personality traits a prospective partner looks for, the Washington Post reported. Other interesting figures from the survey included the finding that only 74 percent of people are happy in their relationship and 66 percent of those questioned believe their partner is their soulmate. But perhaps the most interesting - albeit worrying - discovery was that having sex without emotional ties outside a relationship was not technically regarded as an affair by many. While only 15 percent of those asked admitted to having had an affair, the number confessing to being unfaithful shot up dramatically when the question was phrased as ‘sex outside your current relationship’. A third of men and 19 percent of women then said they had indulged in extra-marital relations. The books goes on to explain that for many, the secret to a happy relationship includes having regular date nights, using pet names, holding hands, passionate kissing, back rubs and frequently saying #39;I love you#39;. But the most important factor that almost everyone surveyed agreed on, was communication. In unhappy relationships, a lack of communication was cited as the number one reason for it breaking down. /201304/236553

I was at my brother's house this week with his 2 kids and I noticed something disturbing. 90% of what this family eats comes from a box or a restaurant. There's nothing wrong with convenience per se, but it seems so unnecessary, expensive and simply unhealthy. In 15 minutes per week, you could prepare most of these things at half the cost. Making them yourself also allows you near-total control of what you and your children eat. Have you ever looked at the sodium content of snacks out there today? Kids get 3 times the recommended daily allowance of sodium before noon! The true cost of packing up these snacks yourself seems to be in the time and effort, which many people treat like a very precious commodity. If you can spare a few minutes each day in an effort to push some healthy foods down your kids throats, you can be on your way to saving money at the grocery store and at the doctor's office as little Johnny becomes healthier. Here are 5 easy ways that you can get moving in the right direction and I challenge you to open your pantry or cabinets and identify other ways you can whip up some Do-it-Yourself magic and come up with healthy alternatives to your snacks.Kids SnacksI've priced it out and buying a tub of pretzels and parceling them into snack bags is literally 3 times cheaper than buying the individual bags. No coupon in the world will save you what 20 minutes will.If that weren't enough of an incentive, this also allows you to customize your kids snacks too. Make Chex Mix without the sugar, take the raisins out of the trail mix since your kid doesn't eat them, etc. Perhaps the best part is these snacks last just as long when you pack them up yourself as they do in their individual packs.Rice Crispy TreatsYes I know pre-made rice crispy bars are awesome and while no one eats them for their health benefits, have you looked at sodium content? Wow.If you make them yourself and keep them in Ziploc bags, they taste better, last just as long, and have much less sodium. As a bonus you can substitute brown puffed rice so you actually get a little fiber.Microwave PopcornRegular microwave popcorn costs about a bag. Bulk popcorn costs about a nickel a bag. There isn't even a choice here. All you have to do is drop a 1/4 cup of kernels in a paper bag with 1/4 teaspoon of salt and 2 teaspoons of olive oil. Then staple the bag shut and microwave it just the same as you would any other bag of popcorn (no, the staples will not cause sparks if your microwave was built after 1986). Cheap, fast, and 0 cholesterol or artificial flavors.Fruit CupTupperware and similar sealed container companies have been striding forward at a remarkable pace; especially in the area of smaller containers. There's no reason you have to buy pre-fab fruit cups anymore. Dicing your own fruit means your kid isn't drinking down the high fructose syrup that most fruit is packed in.DIY fruit cups last about a week so you can do up a batch Sunday night and you're good for school. If you're using apples or some fruit that browns, just sprinkle in a little lime juice.YogurtHave you seen how much sugar is in yogurt these days? My nephew's literally, I'm not making this up, had Mamp;Ms in it. I found that interesting since my sister-in-law is one of those semi-self-righteous moms who would never let her kid eat a candy bar.The same little Tupperware that worked for fruit cups can be filled from a tub of vanilla yogurt with the exact amount of fresh fruit, jam and honey you want your kid to eat (yogurt, strawberries and honey is the best thing ever). If not, you may as well give the kid a candy bar - the sugar levels are nearly the same!Packing your own food for your family has a ton of advantages. It's cheaper, healthier and it gives you total control over what you eat. As I showed here, it's also pretty easy. A hidden value to all of this is that your kids will actually see what you're doing and learn healthy habits early in life.If everything they eat comes shrink-wrapped, zip-topped and in individually wrapped portions, how will they ever learn to cook for themselves? How will they even understand the concept? /200808/45584
