Obama Claims Victory in US Democratic Party Presidential Nomination Race奥巴马宣布获提名初选历史性胜利 Barack Obama claimed the Democratic Party's presidential nomination, Tuesday, after winning a majority of delegates to the party's nominating convention, which will be held in August. Obama claimed victory as the primary election season came to an end, with contests in Montana and South Dakota. Even before the Montana polls had closed, the Illinois senator had gained a clear majority of delegates to the nominating convention as, one by one, uncommitted super delegates - party officials and elected leaders - moved over to his column. He spoke to supporters in Saint Paul, Minnesota, the site of the Republican Party's September convention. Tonight, we mark the end of one historic journey with the beginning of another, a journey that will bring a new and better day to America," he said. "Because of you, tonight I can stand here and say that I will be the Democratic nominee for the president of the ed States of America." The 46-year-old first-term senator is the first African American to become the presumptive presidential nominee of a major American party. He fought a bruising campaign against New York Senator Hillary Clinton, through more than 50 primaries and caucuses in U.S. states and territories. Senator Clinton, addressing her supporters in New York, did not concede the race. Now, the question is, where do we go from here? And, given how far we've come and where we need to go as a party, it's a question I don't take lightly," she said. "This has been a long campaign and I will be making no decisions tonight." She says she will consult with supporters and party officials before making her decision. There have been harsh words exchanged during the campaign, but Senator Clinton said she was honored to compete against Barack Obama and to call him friend. Senator Obama also had praise for his rival. When we transform our energy policy and lift our children out of poverty, it will be because she worked to help make it happen," he said. "Our party and our country are better off because of her and I am a better candidate for having had the honor to compete with Hillary Rodham Clinton." Each candidate has earned impressive primary and caucus wins in a hard-fought campaign season, and to the end both candidates scored victories. Obama won Tuesday in Montana and Clinton took South Dakota. Some Democrats are hoping for a so-called "dream ticket" that would pair the two, with Obama as presidential nominee and Clinton as vice-presidential running mate. The presumed Republican candidate, Arizona Senator John McCain, set his sights on the general election in remarks to his supporters Tuesday in Louisiana. Noting that Obama has campaigned on the theme of change, McCain said Americans are distressed with many changes they now see, from high energy and food prices to job losses. This is indeed a change election. No matter who wins this election, the direction of this country is going to change dramatically," he said. "But the choice is between the right change and the wrong change, between going forward and going backward." McCain promised sweeping reform of government if he is elected. Georgia says it has ordered its troops in the breakaway region of South Ossetia to cease fire, after withdrawing its troops from South Ossetia's capital. It's all part of the China's long term plan to be the first Asian country to land a man on the moon. With Japan and India accelerating their lunar programs and the ed States reviving its interest in the moon, it seems a new space race is on. As our China correspondent Lindsay Hilson now reports, it is as much about military might as it is scientific endeavor.China's first lunar orbiter the Chang'e 1 launched by the Long March 3A rocket from a site in Sichuan province. The launch was broadcasted with about a minute's delay, so if anything went wrong they could pull the plug. But it didn't. And in 20 days time the satellite should start orbiting the moon, taking 3D images and analyzing the distribution of elements on the moon surface. Today's launch marks a significant step in China's lunar mission. Party secretary Hu Jingtao has sent a congratulatory message. Some 2000 Chinese tourists paid 60 pounds each to watch the launch, no foreigners were allowed. This is a matter of national pride. This is our first probe to the moon and it's a symbolic event, I feel this is very important for us. Spending the money is a small matter for me, the main thing is to come here to witness the moment of the launch. It was Chairman Mao, back in 1958 who said China should compete with the US and the Soviet Union in space. The first Chinese rocket was launched in 1960 and the first satellite 10 years later. But it wasn't until 2003 that the Chinese sent a man into orbit: Yang Liwei, who said last week that he hoped one day to found the first branch of the Chinese Communist Party in space. We have a go for main engine to start. Now it seems there is a new space race. And lift off of Discovery. Another Discovery space shuttle was launched from Cape Canaveral yesterday. The astronauts on board will anchor a new European laboratory to the International Space Station--from which the Chinese had been excluded. President Bush recently talked of sending American astronauts back to the moon. We will build new ships to carry men forward into the universe, to gain a new foothold on the moon and prepare for new journey to the worlds beyond our own.(The engine ignition) Last month, Japan launched a lunar orbiter, the most technically complex mission to the moon since the Apollo program of the 1960s. India too has an increasingly ambitious space program. And it's planning a lunar mission next year. China's space budget is less than a tenth of NASA's . But the US military believes China will soon have the capacity to knockout American satellite communications, critical in any future war. China and the US both see space as a new potential battlefield. Today's launch is another way for China to show the world that it is a power to be reckoned with. Aid agencies also say Burma may need food assistance for at least a year to support communities devastated by Cyclone Nargis. In its latest assessment, the U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organization says hundreds of thousands of people in remote regions of the Irrawaddy Delta have yet to receive food aid, nearly a month after the cyclone. Up to 75 percent of the population most in need is not receiving regular food assistance. Aid agencies estimate more than two million people need food, shelter and medical care as a result of Cyclone Nargis, which came ashore the night of May 2. The storm killed 78,000 people and left 56,000 missing. The FAO says food shortages along with escalating prices "posed a risk to national security". Rice prices in Rangoon have doubled this month while prices of staples such as eggs had risen sharply. The cyclone destroyed crops just before the main rice harvest. The loss is compounded by the deaths of 150,000 water buffalo, needed to plow paddies. Paul Risley, the World Food Program's Asia spokesman, says Burma may need aid for a year. It's quiet clear that there will be needs for continued food assistance in all of these communities - not only over the next three months, (or) six months, but possibly until the next proper good harvest and that's going to be literally a year away," Risley said. Aid agencies say a new crop of rice needs to be planted within weeks to avoid a prolonged food crisis. But Risley says it is unlikely the planting will be done. The last thing these farmers are prepared to do right now is to re-seed these fields and plow them and get them back into shape and plant the rice that needs to be planted within the three to four weeks, or we really risk seeing no harvest at all for the next year. And that's an incredibly dangerous situation," Risley said. Debbie Stothardt, the spokeswoman for rights group the Alternative ASEAN Network, says Burma's economy is so fragile that it could force many in the country to migrate looking for work. Even before Cyclone Nargis struck last year Burma experienced an inflation rate of 50 percent," she noted. "If this disaster is not addressed comprehensively and quickly and effectively you are going to send millions of people from Burma out into the rest of the region as migrants simply because they can no longer survive in their own country, which ironically used to be considered "the rice bowl of Asia". Burma's military government last week agreed to allow more foreign aid workers in to the hardest hit areas. Aid agencies say the flow of supplies is growing, but workers still must give authorities 48 hours notice before they can go to the delta region. 200805/40519Indonesia Cancels Plans to Reopen Stock Market Amid Global Financial Turmoil印度尼西亚连续三天关闭股市 Indonesia kept its stock market closed for a third consecutive day Friday to stem panic selling as global markets continued to fall over concerns about the U.S. financial crisis. The Jakarta Stock Exchange President Erry Firmansyah told reporters plans to reopen the market Friday were shelved to "protect investors and prevent further sharp falls." Indonesian authorities had planned to reopen the market after a two-day suspension, but shelved the idea after Asian stocks fell Friday morning as traders dumped stocks in favor of cash amid the global uncertainty. Fuad Rahmani, head of Indonesia's capital market watchdog, says the market might resume trading on Monday. We hope we will be better prepared for Monday to open the market…because the market [has] become very irrational, we have to feed the right information to the market so then the market can take decision more rationally on Monday," he said. Indonesia's benchmark index dropped more than 20 percent this week, driven by the financial turmoil in the ed States, and has fallen 47 percent this year. 47%。Late Thursday evening the government announced new measures to safeguard the economy, including easing reserve requirements for commercial banks, making it easier for listed firms to conduct share buybacks, and easing accounting rules on the fair value of assets. But Helmi Arman, economist at Bank Danamon Indonesia, says the new government measures are unlikely to calm the stock market, the money market, or the banking sector. Everybody's got their eyes on what's happening globally. This is more of a global rather than a domestic issue that's driving down the market. The measures that they've taken, for instance, relaxing of market rules and easing of reserve requirements - it's positive, it's better than nothing," he said. "But whether or not it can stop the decline in the market - I think it will do very little, honestly." Along with plunging Asian markets, Asian currencies were also battered Friday prompting dollar selling intervention in Indonesia, India, and South Korea. This is Anna, on a bus going to an interview for a job as a sales executive at Tip Top Trading – one of Londons fastest growing companies. How are you feeling Anna?你感觉怎么样,安娜?Oh, a little nervous but I really want this job. Well dont worry Anna, as long as you say the right things, youll be fine. The right things! ?
