Scientists have been debating this question for a long time. Some believed that snakes evolved on land, and that their ancestors were small, burrowing lizards. And others believed that snakes evolved fromthe mosasaurs, giant swimming lizards that lived 144 to 65 million years ago. Except its difficult to analyze the genes of the extinct mosasaurs. So instead, scientists at Penn Stateanalyzed the genes of their closest living relatives, the monitor lizards. In fact, these scientists examinedgenetic material representing all nineteen living lizard families, and seventeen of the twenty-five familiesof living snakes. They analyzed the differences in genetic structure that inevitably result from the slight mutations that develop over time. This enabled them to map a genetic family tree. They discovered that snakes arentclosely related to monitor lizards. Now, because the mosasaurs– the monitor lizards ancestors–werethe only marine lizards around when snakes evolved, snakes must have evolved from lizards living onland. Theres a strong correlation between the burrowing lifestyle and very small limbs or the complete lossof limbs. Some burrowing lizards have reduced limbs and some have lost one or both pairs. After all,you could fit into much smaller openings if you didnt need a pelvis or shoulders to support your limbs. 201411/344512

I get casted. And you didnt even..Oh, thats why you get casted.Yeah. Im sure thats not why.But it was a controversial decision because its我知道肯定不是因为这个 这是一个有争议的决定its about this guy, that was a real guy,the bird. And he was a bad man. Yes.He was a very bad man. - Yes. So I wasnt sure that if I was capable of doing this,所以我没什么把握能演好这个角色because I have no experience of an actor and then its still very controversial. As a Japanese,I didnt want to represent my country, you know,作为一个日本人 我不想呈现祖国不好的一面especially that side of country where I was born and raised. So before I met Angie in Tokyo I was not sure about that. But when I talked to her in Tokyo,但后来在东京她跟我谈了谈she said that she wanted to make something她说她想传递一些东西that could be a bridge between America, Japan,希望能成为美日两国even countries which having similar conflicts. So it could happen anywhere. It might happen somewhere. I thought its really meaningful to be a guy in a film.

Flint is going back to Detroit water. The state, the city and the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation together are kicking in million to shut off the tap to the Flint River.A year and a half ago, city leaders stood in Flints water plant and raised plastic glasses to toast the citys switch to the Flint River.Eighteen months later, Governor Snyder has announced the end of the Flint River experiment.;Im in full support of a return to the Great Lakes Water Authority (formerly the DWSD),; Snyder told a mid-morning news conference in Flint, ;and that we do this in a prompt and efficient fashion.;It may only take a few weeks to bring to an end what has become a failed experiment.Since shutting off the pipeline from Detroit and tapping the Flint River for the citys drinking water, Flint residents have endured a progressively nightmarish existence every time they filled a glass from their kitchen faucet. The cloudy water smelled and tasted bad. Then there were E. coli outbreaks. The heavy chlorination in response to those outbreaks left people with burned skin and hair falling out in clumps.A disinfectant by-product landed the city in violation of the Safe Drinking Water Act for a year. And then theres lead.A Virginia Tech research team found serious levels of lead in the tap water in a significant percentage of Flint homes. Other tests showed blood lead levels in Flint children have doubled since the switch.New tests of drinking water in 13 Flint schools show 4 schools with seriously high lead levels. At one school, Freeman Elementary on the citys south side, the water tested at more than 100 parts per billion. Thats more than six times the federal action level for lead. ;We are suggesting we have specialized staff go in and really track who has elevated blood levels,; says Nick Lyon, the director of the Department of Health and Human Services, ;You dont know the facts until you know the facts. So were going to test these children.;Pastor Allen Overton has been a leader in the grassroots movement to return Flint to Detroit water. He listened as the governor and other officials talked about the steps being taken to quickly get Detroit water flowing to Flint again. Overton blames Flints mayor and other city leaders for not asking the governor for help sooner.;If they had (brought) it to the governor before now I think he would have moved before now,; says Overton, ;But they were slow about getting it to the governor. So thats why I think it took so long to get to this point.;The head of Flints public works department says it will take about two weeks to re-connect with Detroits system. But that doesnt end Flints water woes. The highly corrosive Flint River water has caused, by some estimates, tens of millions of dollars in damage to older lead and iron pipes in Flint. Lead will continue to leach into the water even after the switch to a less corrosive water source. Then there are the long-term health effects on children who have been drinking water with high levels of lead for more than a year. Flint Mayor Dayne Walling says the city will need help repairing and replacing the citys aging and decaying water infrastructure. He suggests other cities should pay attention to whats been happening in Flint.;There are important lessons from Flints experience,; says Walling, ;We need to take a look at federal and state policy reforms, that include expanding water safety sampling to include our most vulnerable families.;;We need to look at factors of affordability in public health and infrastructure all being assessed together,; Flints mayor adds. The governor says hes asking the Michigan legislature for half the expected 12 million dollar cost of getting Flint hooked back up to Detroit water. Thats until next year, when a new pipeline from Lake Huron is expected to be y. The Mott Foundation is kicking in four million dollars and the city will come up with two million dollars. This experiment that was supposed to save millions of dollars will most certainly will end up costing the city and the state dearly.201510/402871。

Taking on one of the worlds most powerful brands承担一个世界上最强大的品牌WITH its lofty peaks, peaty water and the steady drip of rain on heather, Bassenthwaite seems an ideal place to make whisky. The nearest Scotch distillery is just 60 miles away. But when the Lakes Distillery, which has just been given planning permission, bottles its first casks of single malt in a few years time, strict EU rules will make it something quite different. It might look like Scotch and taste like Scotch, but the dram will be English. “It was a stroke of genius coining ‘Scotch for a drink that can be made successfully anywhere,” says Andrew Nelstrop, a Norfolk farmer who in 2006 opened Englands first new distillery for more than a century. With the help of a former Laphroaig distiller—a contribution more crucial than any amount of peat or rainfall—St Georges Distillery now sells its English Whisky Company single malts to supermarkets in England, distributors overseas, and even in Scotland. In December Adnams, a Suffolk brewer, will bottle whisky that has been sitting in casks for three years—the time it takes for the European Union to recognise fermented cereal mash as whisky. The London Distillery Company in Battersea is soon to start barrelling a single malt aimed at young urbanites. When that happens, England will have roughly the same number of whisky distilleries as it did in the 19th century. The reasons they closed are murky: a scarcity of equipment as Scottish whisky took off probably played a part. But the resurgence of English whisky is no mystery. Global demand is surging. In emerging economies it is the high-status tipple for a burgeoning middle class. Growth is strong even in mature markets like America. Over the last decade exports of Scotch have risen by 87%, reaching 4.3 billion ( billion) in 2012. Progress on free trade could drive sales much higher. In India, which drinks almost as much whisky as the rest of the world put together, tariffs of 150% have long put imported whisky beyond most drinkers reach. But with the EU hoping to win a tariff reduction under a free-trade agreement with the subcontinent, imbibers of cheap domestic brands such as Bagpiper and Antiquity may soon be able to enjoy whiskies made in, or close to, Scotland. 翻译:谢林红 校对:曾擎禹译文属译生译世 /201512/414237You wear a blouse like that almost.I think the coloring is almost. I think they, they almost painted like us right now.like right now. I look like Rick Shroder I think, and, who do you look like?I dont know.Im not sure. Im not sure if I should say thank you for that Jen?right. 是的oh,no,no,thank the fan.oh,yeah, thank you.yeah,yeah,right. I would let she take this becasue I know you too well. I think its fair.I think its fair.I think its good that you are here.我觉得这很得当 我觉得你们在这里很好then you can ask any questions for real, right?she knows everything about you. 她知道关于你的任何事yeah, right.pretty much?I do.pretty much.I hope so.no,you dont wanna know.mostly,everything. So now lets get to the real stuff.whats it like being married to Ellen?好吧 所以 让我们谈些真事 嫁给Ellen是什么感觉?eh,shes right here.I mean youve known us for a while.yeah.呃 她就在这里 你认识我们有一段时间了 是we have like the best relationship ever.nine years.a great relationship.Wonderful, yeah, its amazing.我们的感情非常棒 9年了 恋爱非常棒 很好 让人惊讶and I know that because I am lucky enough to be witness to it all the time. And it is,its inspiring and you guys are so good to each other. But lets get serious. What,What bugs you about Ellen?但 说真的 Ellen有什么地方让你觉得烦吗?I mean nothing,No.theres gotta be something.Come on.theres nothing. I mean.Ellen, shes answering the question.oh. Portia, come on,theres gotta be something. Is there something?Portia 说吧 总有些事的 有什么吗?this is so hard.I cant do this.I know, just pick one.come on,its fine.这太难了 我不能这么做 我知道 就选一个 说嘛 没事的we will forget about it.what bugs you.Tell me, I can take it.
