Id like to start with a short story. Its about a little boy有个小男孩whose father was a history buff他父亲是个历史爱好者,and who used to take him by the hand常牵着他的手to visit the ruins of an ancient metropolis去造访他们小镇的on the outskirts of their camp. They would always stop by to visit他们总是去看these huge winged bulls that used to guard那个守着古城门的the gates of that ancient metropolis,带翅膀的牛,and the boy used to be scared那时的小男孩of these winged bulls,在害怕那些带翅膀的牛的同时,but at the same time they excited him. And the dad used to use those bulls父亲就用这些牛to tell the boy stories about给小男孩讲that civilization and their work.那个文明的故事和他们的工作Lets fast-forward to the让我们“快进”到数十年后的San Francisco Bay Area many decades later,旧金山湾区,where I started a technology company我在那儿成立了一个家公司that brought the world its first研发出了世界上第一个3D laser scanning system.3D镭射扫描系统。Let me show you how it works. Female Voice: Long range laser scanning女声:长距离镭射扫描by sending out a pulse thats a laser beam of light. The system measures the beams time of flight,系统测量光束传播时间,recording the time it takes for the light纪录下它从接触到一个表面to hit a surface and make its return. With two mirrors, the scanner calculates扫描仪通过两个镜子计算the beams horizontal and vertical angles,光束的水平垂直角度,giving accurate x, y, and z coordinates. The point is then recorded这个点就被into a 3D visualization program.3D可视化软件记录下来。All of this happens in seconds. Ben Kacyra: You can see here,本·凯萨拉:可以看到,these systems are extremely fast. They collect millions of points at a time能一次性with very high accuracy高精度高像素地and very high resolution. A surveyor with traditional survey tools一个使用传统工具的测量员would be hard-pressed to produce要在一整天内绘制500个点maybe 500 points in a whole day. These babies would be producing而这些小家伙something like ten thousand points a second. So, as you can imagine,你能想到,this was a paradigm shift这不仅是测量和建筑业in the survey and construction一个范式转变as well as in reality capture industry. Approximately ten years ago,大约十年前,my wife and I started a foundation to do good,我和我妻子建立了一个慈善基金,and right about that time,那时候,the magnificent Bamiyan Buddhas,巴米扬大佛,hundred and eighty foot tall in Afghanistan,一座矗立在阿富汗的180英尺高的佛像,were blown up by the Taliban. They were gone in an instant. And unfortunately, there was不幸的是,no detailed documentation of these Buddhas. This clearly devastated me,这深深触动了我,and I couldnt help but wonder about我不由得想到the fate of my old friends, the winged bulls,我的老朋友 那头带翅膀的牛的命运,and the fate of the many, many还有世界各地heritage sites all over the world. Both my wife and I我和我妻子were so touched by this受此激发that we decided to决定expand the mission of our foundation将基金承担的业务范围to include digital heritage preservation延伸到世界文物古迹的of world sites. We called the project CyArk,我们称之为“数字方舟”计划,which stands for Cyber Archive. To date, with the help of迄今为止a global network of partners,在全球合作伙伴的帮助下,weve completed close to fifty projects. Let me show you some of them:这是其中一部分:Chichen Itza,奇琴伊察,Rapa Nui --复活节岛and what youre seeing here这里你看到的是are the cloud of points --数据点集合—Babylon,巴比伦,Rosslyn Chapel,罗斯林教堂,Pompeii,庞贝遗址and our latest project, Mt. Rushmore,和最近的一个项目:总统山which happened to be one of这是最具挑战的our most challenging projects. As you see here, we had to develop可以看到,我们得开发a special rig to bring the scanner一种特殊钻机up close and personal. Nearly six years after the worst financial crisis of our lifetimes, our businesses have added nearly 10 million new jobs over the past 53 months.6年前,我们遭遇了此生最严重的经济危机,经过53个月的努力,我们的企业已经创造了将近1000万个就业岗位。Thats the longest streak of private-sector job creation in our history. And were in a six-month streak with our economy creating at least 200,000 new jobs each month-the first time thats happened since 1997. Thanks to the decisions we made to rescue and rebuild our economy, and your hard work and resilience, America is leading again. Areas like manufacturing, energy, technology, and autos are all booming. And heres the thing: were selling more goods Made in America to the rest of the world than ever before. American exports are at an all-time high. Over the past five years, weve worked hard to open new markets for our businesses, and to help them compete on a level playing field in those markets. And weve broken records for exports four years running. Last year, our exports supported more than 11 million American jobs-about 1.6 million more than when I took office. Theyre good jobs that typically pay about 15% more than the national average. 15%。And more small businesses are selling their goods abroad than ever before-nearly 300,000 last year alone. We should be doing everything we can to accelerate this progress, not stall it. One place to start is by supporting something called the U.S. It helps many American entrepreneurs take that next step and take their small business global. But next month, its charter will expire-unless Members of Congress do their job and reauthorize it. Now, past Congresses have done this 16 times, always with support from both parties. Republican and Democratic Presidents have supported the bank, too. This time around shouldnt be any different. Because the bank works. Its independent. It pays for itself. But if Congress fails to act, thousands of businesses, large and small, that sell their products abroad will take a completely unnecessary hit. Small business owners have had to overcome a lot these past several years. We all saw local businesses close their doors during the crisis. And in the past few years, weve seen more and more open their doors and do their part to help lead Americas comeback. At the very least, they deserve a Congress that doesnt stand in the way of their success. Your members of Congress are home this month. If youre a small business owner or employee of a large business that depends on financing to tackle new markets and create new jobs, tell them to quit treating your business like its expendable, and start treating it for what it is: vital to Americas success. Tell them to do their jobs-keep Americas exports growing, and keep Americas recovery going. Thanks, and have a great weekend.

But I had a childhood, and I was allowed to make mistakes and find my own way in the world without the glare of the spotlight. When I first heard that Michael had died, I was in London, days away from the opening of my tour. Michael was going to perform in the same venue as me a week later. All I could think about in this moment was, ;I had abandoned him.; That we had abandoned him. That we had allowed this magnificent creature who had once set the world on fire to somehow slip through the cracks. While he was trying to build a family and rebuild his career, we were all busy passing judgment. Most of us had turned our backs on him. In a desperate attempt to hold on to his memory, I went on the Internet to watch old clips of him dancing and singing on TV and on stage and I thought, ;My God, he was so unique, so original, so rare, and there will never be anyone like him again. But he was also a human being, and alas we are all human beings and sometimes we have to lose things before we can truly appreciate them. I want to end this on a positive note and say that my sons, age nine and four, are obsessed with Michael Jackson. Theres a whole lot of crotch grabbing and moon walking going on in my house. And, it seems like a whole new generation of kids has discovered his genius and are bringing him to life again. I hope that wherever Michael is right now he is smiling about this. Yes, yes, Michael Jackson was a human being but he was a king. Long live the king. 一个永世长存的王者!201312/271084And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford. And all of my working-class parents savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldnt see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didnt interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting. It wasnt all romantic. I didnt have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends rooms. I returned coke bottles for the five-cent deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example. Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didnt have to take the normal classes. I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science cant capture, and I found it fascinating. None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later. Again, you cant connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something, your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. Because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart, even when it leads you off the well-worn path, and that will make all the difference. So what exactly is a successful life? How do you define it? Does being successful require you to amass material possessions or to wield great power? Must you be famous, or even become a celebrity? Perhaps its more about being devoted to serving others less fortunate than you or enjoying a life with family and friends, or living sustainably and leaving a legacy, such as world peace. Trying to answer this question drew me to the innovative TED website earlier this year. TED (standing for technology, entertainment and design) is a small non-profit organization devoted to ideas worth sping. They do this through their website and annual US and UK conferences where they bring together the worlds most fascinating thinkers and doers. TED(指technology, entertainment, design在英语中的缩写,即技术、、设计)是一家小型非盈利机构,该机构通过他们的网站和美英年度会议致力于有价值的思想的传播。 This is where I found a very appealing definition of success, which was used by a well known American basketball coach called John Wooden. He defines true success as peace of mind through knowing that you have made the effort to do the best of which you are capable. This is appealing because it means that anyone from anywhere can live a successful life with a bit of hard work and self-belief. He also argues that you should never let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do. And that is a great piece of advice.
