When Steve Jobs, the late chief executive of Apple, launched the Macintosh computer in 1984, he hid behind the lectern, ing from notes and glancing at his feet.1984年发布麦金塔电脑(Macintosh)时,身为苹果(Apple)首席执行官的史蒂夫吠布斯(Steve Jobs)躲在讲台后面,照稿朗读,并不时看着自己的双脚。By 1996, he was walking around the stage, speaking fluently. But he was still stiff, much like the Tin Man character in The Wizard of Oz movie, says Olivia Fox Cabane, who teaches charisma to chief executives. By 2000, when he announced his return as chief executive of Apple, Mr Jobs had turned into a showman. At that point, “he owns the stage. His eye contact is outstanding, hand gestures are carefully orchestrated and in fact, he’s using the same techniques as professional magicians”, she writes. Ms Cabane, author of the The Charisma Myth, is one of a growing band of experts making a living out of teaching senior executives that “personal magnetism” — a combination of presence, power and warmth — can be learned. Her argument is supported by academic research, which shows that people taught charismatic skills are more likely to be followed. Drawing from his team’s study, John Antonakis, professor of organisational behaviour at the University of Lausanne, says that leaders who learn 12 charismatic traits — such as using an animated voice or expressing moral conviction — become more “influential, trustworthy and leaderlike”. Charisma influences everyone from voters to company chairmen. Dr Antonakis says he and his team can predict who will win the US presidency on the basis of which candidate has more charisma and how well the incumbent party has handled the economy. They found similar results in an experimental study where the probability of a chief executive being reappointed depended on his or her charisma and the organisation’s performance. Although many of us assume charisma is something a person either does or does not possess, experts say we can all be taught the seemingly indefinable allure of Bill Clinton or David Beckham. Richard Reid, who runs charisma classes for companies including Google and Ernst amp; Young, says it is about finding a style that suits your personality. The trick is to “celebrate each individual’s uniqueness” or it will seem artificial, says Mr Reid. He says Ed Miliband, who lost the race to become UK prime minister this year, received coaching but “became increasingly inauthentic along with it”. Much of the emphasis in Mr Reid’s training is on body, rather than verbal language — especially “micro-manoeuvres” such as holding someone’s gaze. First impressions count and even a seemingly involuntary blink of the eye can weaken your influence when meeting someone for the first time, he says, adding that once an opportunity is lost, it takes a lot longer to establish trust. To maximise your chance of getting it right, he suggests picturing a time when you felt most confident before entering a room to meet someone important or give a presentation. People are drawn to those who are purposeful and can make them feel safe and heard. Mr Reid compares it to throwing “an arm around the shoulder” and whispering: “Can you see my vision with me?” One way is to interrupt a conversation partner, saying you are doing so “to make sure I’ve understood” and then to repeat the speaker’s words. “Although we think we’re good listeners, we’re not,” Mr Reid says.“我们都认为自己是优秀的听众,其实我们不是,”里德说。If you are trying to persuade someone they want to go to Madrid rather than Rome do not use the word “why”, for example. “Why” is often perceived as a challenge, so best avoided when undergoing a workplace performance evaluation. In conflict, people tend to end up face to face, jabbing fingers at each other. Mr Reid advises angling your body and referring to the problem as if it is slightly beyond the both of you. Although useful techniques, they beg the question of whether these are anything more than good communications skills. Rob Shimmin, an executive coach for multinationals including Dell, Visa, DuPont and De Beers, admits, “ You can learn to be credible, but not necessarily charismatic.” He believes many of the traits that breed charisma, much like the rest of personality, are set in childhood. “You can’t buy charisma, be it from a smart corporate coach or a private school.”“你无法买来魅力,无论是从一位聪明的企业培训师或是一所私立学校。”But you can get close. “The better able you are to learn the behaviours of charismatic people the more impact you are likely to have when you communicate.” /201512/415751

Xiao Yan, the founder of Liang, was a master of poems and was appointed the Garrison Commander of Yongzhou in 499. Taking advantages of confusion in Southern Qi, he secured the throne and established Liang. He was called Emperor Wu of Liang and his court existed 48 years. At that time the Wei in the south was split and weak enough to be defeated, however, the rulers of Liang let the opportunity slip through their fingers except focus their minds on exploiting their people. With no rules from the Emperor to regulate, Liang underwent a dark situation in which the children of prestigious family acted at their wills or even killed persons and seized his goods to the view;the officials of the court were mad in gathering money. One governor, Yu Hong once said that he would snatch all the wealth to the extent that there was no fish in water, no games in woods, no grains in fields and no people in towns. Besides , the rulers of Liang were merciless to their people. For example there were as much as 5000 civilians was sentenced to prisonment above two years given the fact that the total registered permanent residents was 500 000 then. The prison was always crowded. In 547, Hou Jing, the general of the Eastern Wei, had a quarrel with Gao Cheng, who held an important position in the government. To betray his country and to contribute to Liang, Hou Jing promised to surrender with 13 cities south of the Yellow River under his administration. Tempted by this, Emperor Wu sent general Xiao Yuanming to march north to receive the surrender. However, Xiao Yuan-ming was defeated and captured by the armies of the Eastern Wei. Shortly afterwards, the Eastern Wei disintegrated 40 000 of Hou Jing’s solders in Guoyang(now Meng city, Anhui) and the latter retreated to Shouyang. To further destroy Hou Jing, Gao Cheng plotted to build friendly terms with Liang. Without approvals from his ministers Emperor Wu of Liang agreed and promised to hand out Hou Jing in return of Xiao Yuanming. Trapped in the corner in 548, Hou Jing fought back to Shouyang, crossed the Yangtze River, seized the Shitou Cheng(Stone district) and Dong Cheng(Eastern City District)of Jiankang City and isolated Tai Cheng, the district where Xiao Yan resided. Being isolated and surrounded, most the soldiers starved to death. In March the following year, Tai Cheng was occupied, Xiao Yan was put under house arrest and starved to death soon. Xiao Gang became a figurehead emperor after Xiao Yan died. However, while projecting his influence, Hou Jing was confronted by severe opposes from the re-maining army of Liang and local militia. The army led by Wang Sengbian, subordinate of King of Xiang Dong,Xiao Yi,the seventh son of Xiao Yan,beat Hou Jing and headed for the east. Even worse, governor Chen Baxian of Liang also set out with his army from Guang Dong. Being eager to ascend to throne, Hou Jing dethroned Xiao Gang, then Xiao Dong and proclaimed to be Emperor of Han accompanied with the mass killing of Xiao9s families. Up to now, Liang was at the end of the rope. In 552, Wang Sengbian and Chen Baxian captured Jiankang and Hou Jing was killed by his followers in an attempted escape. In 557, Chen Baxian replaced Liang with Chen. /201601/421835

5.Images5.图像法This is the most effective way to remember a person’s name. If you meet John Key, imagine his face with a big key right in the center of his face. If you meet someone called Patty Grant, you can try to remember a meat patty wrapped in wads of cash. I will leave it up to your own imagination if you meet Bob Johnson. Another way to do this is to find an association between this person and someone else you know – imagine them shaking hands or standing next to each other. 4.Visualize4.想象This is a very ancient technique of memorization called Loci. In this method you imagine a location (something easy like your home) and you place the objects you need to remember in to a different part of the room. The famous Cicero had this to say:这是一个非常古老的记忆方法,称之为位置。 著名的西塞罗说:“One must employ a large number of places which must be well-lighted, clearly set out in order, at moderate intervals apart, and images which are active, which are sharply defined, unusual, and which have the power of speedily encountering and penetrating the mind.”For example, if you need to remember a list of vegetables, put each vegetable in a different place in the room. When you need to recall the list, move in your mind through each location in the room and see what you put there. If you find this one especially helpful, you can expand on it by adding additional floors to your location.“一个人必须有一大块空间,它光线充足,有适当的大小,还必须有积极地清晰的、不寻常的图像,还有可以迅速使用、有洞察力的大脑。” 3.Story Method3.故事法This one can be very fun. Make up a story and include all of the things you need to remember in it. The story can be totally ridiculous. Let’s say you need to remember to buy a bucket, a dozen apples, a hairbrush, and some kitty litter, you might make a story like this:这种方法很有趣。 After Jane emptied the kitty litter from Felix’s dirtbox in to the red bucket, she gave him a good brushing with his new hairbrush while she ate an apple for lunch. It is not the most thrilling or original story, but it can be very effective in helping you to remember your list. 2.Mnemonics2.助记术A mnemonic is a word or short phrase that you can use to remember something because it is like a key to the rest of the information. For example, if you learned music as a child, you probably remember the phrase: “every good boy deserves fruit” – each word stands for a note on the musical staff – EGBDF. No doubt you were also taught a mnemonic to remember the colors of the rainbow as well. Another slight variation is to use a phrase: desert and dessert: the sweet one has two sugars. We also use this to remember daylight savings time: Spring forward, fall back.另一个细微的变化是用于短语:desert(沙漠)和dessert(甜点): the sweet one has two sugars. 1.Senses1.感官If you have to remember a word, try remembering it with your other senses. For example, if you have to remember to buy soap, try to conjure up an image of soap and whilst doing so, imagine what it smells like. You can also use your other senses in the same way: to remember to buy an alarm clock, remember the sound it makes when it goes off in the morning. All of the items on this list can be used on their own, or in conjunction with the others to help you improve your memory. The more you practice these tips, the better you will become.
