But scientists from Cornell University wanted to know whether the type of programming made a difference. To find out, they gave snacks to 97 undergraduate students and split them into three groups. The first group watched a loud, frenetic clip from “The Island,” a 2005 action movie directed by Michael Bay. The second watched part of a Charlie Rose interview program on PBS. The third group watched the same excerpt from “The Island” as the first group, but without sound. The first group consumed the most by far — 65 percent more calories than the “Charlie Rose” group (354 calories versus 215) and 98 percent more food (7.3 ounces versus 3.7). The group that watched “The Island” on mute ate 46 percent more calories (315) and 36 percent more food (five ounces) than the Rose group. “We choose this particular movie for its pacing,” said Aner Tal, a research associate at Cornell’s Food and Brand Lab and the study’s lead author. He added, “It could be that the camera cuts and sound set the tempo for the pace at which people eat.”“我们选择这部影片是因为它的节奏,”康奈尔食品与品牌实验室的研究员,以及该调查曝光的主笔阿纳尔·塔尔(Aner Tal)说。

Chilean engineers have been left red faced by a delay in the grand opening of the country#39;s first-ever drawbridge - after they discovered a major part was installed upside down. The million Cau Cau bridge was supposed to open this month as an instant landmark connecting Valdivia, a coastal city in the south of Chile, with the adjacent Teja Island. The bridge has ended up a laughing stock among Chilean social media users, who are wondering how construction workers managed to mess up something as seemingly clear as up and down. One wag tweeted a scrawly child#39;s picture of a bridge, rendered in coloured pencil, with the quip: #39;Leak of the installation plans for the Cau Cau bridge in Valdivia.#39;智利公共作业部长Loreto Silva说:“唯一应该对此事负责的人就是建桥的人。 The mistake emerged when inspectors getting y for opening day found that either one or two of the traffic decks were installed backwards, authorities said. Azvi, the Spanish infrastructure company behind the bridge development, did not immediately comment. A new opening date has not been announced. Valdivia, which is 520 miles south of Chile#39;s sprawling capital Santiago, is home to about 125,000 people. In recent years, large-scale epidemiological studies have found that people whose diets include dark chocolate have a lower risk of heart disease than those whose diets do not. Other research has shown that chocolate includes flavonols, natural substances that can reduce the risk of disease. But it hasn#39;t been clear how these flavonols could be affecting the human body, especially the heart. New findings from Virginia Tech and Louisiana State University, however, suggest an odd explanation for chocolate#39;s goodness: It improves health largely by being indigestible. Researchers at Louisiana State reached this conclusion after simulating the human digestive system in glass vessels. One represented the stomach and the small intestine, with their digestive enzymes, and a second reproduced a large-intestine-like environment, with gut microbes from human volunteers. The scientists then added cocoa powder to the stomach vessel. The ;stomach; and ;small intestine; broke down and absorbed some of the cocoa. But while many of the flavonols previously identified in chocolate were digested in this way, there was still plenty of undigested cocoa matter. Gut bacteria in the simulated colon then broke that down further into metabolites, small enough to be absorbed into the bloodstream and known to reduce cardiac inflammation. Finally, the last undigested cocoa matter, now mostly fiber, began to ferment, releasing substances that improve cholesterol levels. And there was another health-giving twist to this entire process: The gut microbes that digested the cocoa were desirable probiotics like lactobacillus. Their numbers appeared to increase after the introduction of the cocoa, while less-salutary microbes like staphylococcus declined in number.“胃”和“小肠”系统分解并吸收了部分可可粉,但当许多巧克力内的黄醇酮被消化的同时,仍有大量可可粉末没有被消化。 These findings are broadly consistent with those from Virginia Tech, published in March in The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. Researchers there began by feeding healthy lab mice a high-fat diet. Some of the mice were also given unsweetened cocoa extract; others were fed various types of flavonols extracted from the cocoa. After 12 weeks, most of the mice had grown fat and unwell, characterized by insulin resistance, high blood sugar and incipient diabetes. A few, however, had not gained weight. These animals had ingested one of the flavonol groups whose chemical structure seems to be too large to be absorbed by the small intestine. What the results suggest, says Andrew Neilson, an assistant professor at Virginia Tech and the senior author of the mouse study, is that ;there is something going on with cocoa in the colon,; but what that means for chocolate lovers is not clear. Future experiments, he hopes, will tease out why one flavonol group impeded weight gain and the others did not. Do not hold your breath for a cocoa-based diet pill anytime soon, though. Cocoa#39;s biochemical impacts are ;extremely complex,; he says. Sadly, Dr. Neilson also points out that cocoa is not a chocolate bar, something whose added ingredients and processing reduce the number and type of flavonols, increase calories (cocoa itself has very few) and possibly change the response of gut bacteria to the cocoa. ;The evidence does not show that you can eat a chocolate bar every day and expect to improve your health,; he says. A few tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder sprinkled onto oatmeal or a handful of cocoa nibs — bits of the cacao bean, available at natural-food stores — would be better, he says less than sweetly.

Do you remember trying this as a kid -- Holding one of the seashells you grabbed as a souvenir up to your ear? It seems like no matter how far away from the ocean you are, you can still hold a seashell up to your ear and hear the roar of the waves rolling onto the shore. The best shells for producing this sound are the large, spiral conch shells. Some people have suggested that the sound you hear from the seashell is the echoing of your blood rushing through the blood vessels of your ear. That is not the case. If that were true, then the sound would intensify after exercising, since your blood races faster after exercising. However, the sound is the same even after exercising. Others say that the whooshing sound inside the shell is generated by air flowing through the shell - air flowing through the shell and out creates a noise. You#39;ll notice that the sound is louder when you lift the shell slightly away from your ear than it is when the shell is right against your head. However, this theory doesn#39;t hold true in a soundproof room. In a soundproof room, there is still air, but when you hold the seashell to your ear, there#39;s no sound. The most likely explanation for the wave-like noise is ambient noise from around you. The seashell that you are holding just slightly above your ear captures this noise, which resonates inside the shell. The size and shape of the shell therefore has some effect on the sound you hear. Different shells sound different because different shells accentuate different frequencies. You don#39;t even need the seashell to hear the noise. You can produce the same ;ocean; sound using an empty cup or even by cupping your hand over your ear. Go ahead and try it and vary the distance at which you place the cup near your ear. The level of the sound will vary depending on the angle and distance the cup is from your ear. Noise from outside the shell also can change the intensity of the sound you hear inside the shell. You can look at the shell as a resonating chamber. When sound from outside enters the shell, it bounces around, thus creating an audible noise. So, the louder the environment you are in, the louder the ocean-like sound will be.
