In Northern Canada, winter slowly loosens its grip, and a young polar bear is hungry. It sniffs a meal aly in progress, and decides to play a dangerous game, a food snatch. His opponent is larger, older, and won’t tolerate a rival. A second try, he scores a quick nibble. It is a game of patience and cunning, but a loss can result in death. Adult males will kill younger bears if it suits them. The older male has had enough. He charges, pushing the adolescent further and further back. The young one admits defeat, and retreats to safe ground. He begins a new game, a waiting game. The older bear devours his meal, licking the carcass, cleaning up blubber. When the adult male has had his fill[1],he wanders off, leaving the scraps for his opponent. The young one feeds on the remains. It wins a consolation prize[2] of sorts[3], a full belly. But it will be a long time before it is y to compete again. Among the new measures is one ordering U.N. member states to inspect ships suspected of transporting prohibited weapons and other materials into or out of North Korea. Japan's U.N. envoy, Yukio Takasu, noted some success on that front, citing the imminent return to North Korea of a ship suspected of carrying banned weapons. "I think it is good that [the] DPRK [i.e., the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, or North Korea] got the message that wherever it goes -- that any port or countries in the region -- will be cooperating in compliance with resolutions. And probably that was the reason why they changed directions. It is welcome development," he said. The ship, the Kang Nam 1, reportedly was bound for Burma, when it changed course late last month after a U.S. warship began following it. • The View ladies talking about Rihanna Rihanna was hit by her boyfriend Chris Brown, The View ladies are talking about it. Welcome back to a Day of Hot Topics on The View. Now E! Online reports that Rihanna and Chris Brown reunited in Miami this weekend and her father Ronald Fenty apparently supported her decision saying "whatever road she chooses I'm behind her". Good for him. What d'you think? You think so?Yea, I do.Well, I mean you can't just say we're gonna, you know, if you get back together with Chris, we're not gonna talk to you any more. She's a grown woman.I would, if he touches my daughter one more time, I will get his ******.He probably did. I'm sure he probably did say something like that, I mean. That's kinda like a father's kinda impetuses, his natural reaction. We don't know that he didn't say that to Chris.(But to say with, I think he probably would say...)I think he came out. He publicly, we public, you know, he publicly supported her. But I, you know, what concerns me is I would hope that, you know, he says he's going to anger management classes, that if she's gonna take him back, they both go to some classes. I would really love to see them do something for the young people. I would really love to see them do some PSAs (公益广告) about hitting people. And Rihanna, if it happens again, you'd better run for the hills, cuz...They are gonna get their stuff together first. Why can't you have a time-out from the guy though, you know, have a time-out, go anger management for a year and then we'll discuss it.I still want to hear what actually happened cuz we still don't know. But we saw the picture. That doesn't matter, seeing the picture, (You don't know what happened Sherri.)we don't... We still don't know what happens. And I find it extraordinarily interesting that it has not come out. So, there is a lot going on in this particular situation that we're not aware of, I believe.Just think, you know, the young, Sherri talked about her niece, so you think about young girls who are watching this and using this as a model. You know, you just have to, I don't know. It upsets me because I feel as though these young girls to get back with someone after he has done that to you. They are not married. They don't have a commitment. I hope they're not. I really hope they're not.(One hopes...) Go and find someone who treats you right. Don't...One hopes...Where was it? One hopes that after a period of time, she will say this is my relationship. (Yes.)This is a man I loved, I wanted, and I 've taken back with these conditions. So, this is, again, we don't know.Point is what happened actually.run for the hills: When someone really wants to get away from a situation or relationship as fast as they can, they "run for the hills."04/68169。
  • In U.S. politics, there is no issue that divides Democrats and Republicans more than their vastly different views on the role and size of the central government. That political divide is at the heart of the intensifying debate over the federal budget. Republicans made significant gains in last November’s midterm congressional elections, and many of them saw the election results as proof Americans want to sharply cut the size of the federal government. That is why Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell and others were quick to dismiss President Barack Obama’s .7-trillion budget proposal for 2012 that includes a mix of spending cuts and tax increases. The people who voted for a new direction in November have a five word response - 'We do not have the money,'" said McConnell. Republicans are putting forward a budget blueprint of their own that calls for far deeper cuts in federal spending to reverse the course of soaring budget deficits. This battle over how much to cut from the federal budget will dominate the Washington political scene for the foreseeable future and also sets the scene for the 2012 presidential election campaign. The gap between the two parties over the budget seems huge, but President Obama says even in the wake of last year’s elections, most Americans want to see the two sides find common ground.
Every which way but solved远未解决A bail-out strategy as bankrupt as Greece should be ditched. May 12th 2011 | ATHENS AND LONDON | from the print editionIF APRIL is the cruellest month for poets, May is the harshest one for European leaders. A year ago they tore up the rule book to bail out Greece and to ward off market attacks on other fiscal reprobates in the euro area. The first anniversary of the rescue mission has been nothing to celebrate. Despite a year of grinding hardship Greece looks ever more likely to have to restructure its debts. The official rescue funds hastily mustered in May 2010 have had to be deployed twice more since then, first to support Ireland late last year, and now to keep Portugal afloat. The most pressing concern is Greece. The big hitters in the euro area—in particular Germany and the European Central Bank—are squabbling furiously about how to deal with the country’s debt burden. News of a “secret” meeting on May 6th between finance ministers from Greece and its main euro-area creditor states leaked out along with a report that Greece might leave the euro. That claim was strenuously denied. But policymakers seem unable to agree on much else. 201105/138093。
