My father was a self-taught mandolin player. He was one of the best string instrument players in our town. He could not music, but if he heard a tune a few times, he could play it. When he was younger, he was a member of a small country music band. They would play at local dances and on a few occasions would play the local radio station. He often told us how he had )auditioned and earned a position in a band that featured Patsy Cline as their lead singer. He told the family that after he was hired he never went back. Dad was a very religious man. He stated that there was a lot of drinking and cursing the day of his audition and he did not want to be around that type of environment.Occasionally, Dad would get out his mandolin and play the family. We three children Trisha, Monte and I, George Jr., would often sing along. Songs such as the Tennessee Waltz, Harbor Lights and around Christmas time, the well-known 3)rendition of Silver Bells. "Silver Bells, Silver Bells, its Christmas time in the city" would ring throughout the house. One of Dad's favorite )hymns was "The Old Rugged Cross". We learned the words to the hymn when we were very young, and would sing it with Dad when he would play and sing. Another song that was often shared in our house was a song that accompanied the Walt Disney series Davey Crockett. Dad only had to hear the song twice bee he learned it well enough to play it. "Davey, Davey Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier" was a favorite song the family. He knew we enjoyed the song and the program and would often get out the mandolin after the program was over. I could never get over how he could play the songs so well after only hearing them a few times. I loved to sing, but I never learned how to play the mandolin. This is something I regret to this day.Dad loved to play the mandolin his family he knew we enjoyed singing, and hearing him play. He was like that. If he could give pleasure to others, he would, especially his family. He was always there, sacrificing his time and efts to see that his family had enough in their life. I had to mature into a man and have children of my own bee I realized how much he had sacrificed.I joined the ed States Air ce in January of 196. Whenever I would come home on leave, I would ask Dad to play the mandolin. Nobody played the mandolin like my father. He could touch your soul with the tones that came out of that old mandolin. He seemed to shine when he was playing. You could see his pride in his ability to play so well his family. When Dad was younger, he worked his father on the farm. His father was a farmer and 5)sharecropped a farm the man who owned the property. In 1950, our family moved from the farm. Dad had gained employment at the local 6)limestone 7)quarry. When the quarry closed in August of 1957, he had to seek other employment. He worked Owens Yacht Company in Dundalk, Maryland and Todd Steel in Point of Rocks, Maryland. While working at Todd Steel, he was involved in an accident. His job was to roll angle iron onto a 8)conveyor so that the 9)welders farther up the production line would have it to complete their job. On this particular day Dad got the third index finger of his left hand mashed between two pieces of steel. The doctor who operated on the finger could not save it, and Dad ended up having the tip of the finger )amputated. He didn't lose enough of the finger where it would stop him picking up anything, but it did impact his ability to play the mandolin. After the accident, Dad was reluctant to play the mandolin. He felt that he could not play as well as he had bee the accident. When I came home on leave and asked him to play he would make excuses why he couldn't play. Eventually, we would )wear him down and he would say "Okay, but remember, I can't hold down on the strings the way I used to" or "Since the accident to this finger I can't play as good". the family it didn't make any difference that Dad couldn't play as well. We were just glad that he would play. When he played the old mandolin it would carry us back to a cheerful, happier time in our lives. "Davey, Davey Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier", would again be heard in the little town of Bakerton, West Virginia. In August of 1993 my father was )diagnosed with )inoperable lung cancer. He chose not to receive )chemotherapy treatments so that he could live out the rest of his life in dignity. About a week bee his death, we asked Dad if he would play the mandolin us. He made excuses but said "okay". He knew it would probably be the last time he would play us. He )tuned up the old mandolin and played a few notes. When I looked around, there was not a dry eye in the family. We saw bee us a quiet humble man with an inner strength that comes from knowing God, and living with him in one's life. Dad would never play the mandolin us again. We felt at the time that he wouldn't have enough strength to play, and that makes the memory of that day even stronger. Dad was doing something he had done all his life, giving. As sick as he was, he was still pleasing others. Dad sure could play that Mandolin! 5。

I hope our monitor is better. I hope our monitor is all right now. Your family are quite well, I hope. 明天会下雪吗?— I hope not. We hope an early spring. In this I hope your help. Hope the best and prepare the worst. After the dry weather everyone hopes rain. I hope to hear from you soon.Hope to do something I hope to find you in better spirits when we meet again. I hope to be back tomorrow night. I hope to have finished the work by now. We can’t hope to win an easy victory. 我们不能指望轻易取胜—I hope very much to go to the exhibition. What is it you want me to do?Want someonesomething+to do的意思是“想要某人、某物做某事如:当你想和朋友一道去做什么事的时候,可以说 Don’t you want someone to go along with you? I don’t want such a thing to happen again. We wanted this meeting to be a successful one. I want you to think it over bee you make a decision. I want you to see him without delay. We don’t want you getting into trouble.want I don’t want people playing the piano at all hours of the day and night! Who wants you thinking about me? 谁要你考虑我?I wouldn’t want an old man like you interfering in my affairs.

The 50-Percent Theory of Life I believe in the 50-percent theory. Half the time things are better than normal; the other half, they are worse. I believe life is apendulumswing. It takes time and experience to understand what normal is, and that gives me the perspective to deal with the surprises of the future. Let’s benchmark theparameters yes, I will die. I’ve dealt with the deaths of both parents, a best friend, a beloved boss and cherished pets. Some of these deaths have been violent, bee my eyes, or slow and agonizing. Bad stuff, and it belongs at the bottom of the scale. Then there are those high points romance and marriage to the right person; having a child and doing those Dad things like coaching my son’s baseball team, paddlingaround the creek in the boat while he’s swimming with the dogs, discovering his compassion so deep it manifests even in his kindness to snails, his imagination so vivid he builds a spaceship from a scattered pile of Legos. But there is a vast meadow of life in the middle, where the bad and the good flip-flop acrobatically. This is what convinces me to believe in the 50-percent theory.

If we can recognize that change and uncertainty are basic principles, we can greet the future and the transmation we are undergoing with the understanding that we do not know enough to be pessimistic. 7979。

Scientific Theories In science, a theory is a reasonable explanation of observed events that are related. A theory often involves an imaginary model that helps scientists picture the way an observed event could be produced. A good example of this is found in the kinetic molecular theory, in which gases are pictured as being made up of many small ps that are in constant motion. A useful theory, in addition to explaining past observations, helps to predict events that have not as yet been observed. After a theory has been publicized, scientists design experiments to test the theory. If observations confirm the scientists' predictions, the theory is supported. If observations do not confirm the predictions, the scientists must search further. There may be a fault in the experiment, or the theory may have to be revised or rejected. Science involves imagination and creative thinking as well as collecting inmation and perming experiments. Facts by themselves are not science. As the mathematician Jules Henri Poincare said,"Science is built with facts just as a house is built with bricks, but a collection of facts cannot be called science any more than a pile of bricks can be called a house." Most scientists start an investigation by finding out what other scientists have learned about a particular problem. After known facts have been gathered, the scientist comes to the part of the investigation that requires considerable imagination. Possible solutions to the problem are mulated. These possible solutions are called hypotheses. In a way, any hypothesis is a leap into the unknown. It extends the scientist's thinking beyond the known facts. The scientist plans experiments, perms calculations, and makes observations to test hypotheses. Without hypothesis, further investigation lacks purpose and direction. When hypotheses are confirmed, they are incorporated into theories. 086。

The Road to SuccessIt is well that young men should begin at the beginning and occupy the most subordinate positions. Many of the leading businessmen of Pittsburgh had a serious responsibility thrust upon themat the very threshold oftheir career. They were introduced to the broom, and spent the first hours of their business lives sweeping out the office. I notice we havejanitorsand janitresses now in offices, and our young men untunately miss thatsalutarybranch of business education. But if by chance the professional sweeper is absent any morning, the boy who has the genius of the future partner in him will not hesitate to try his hand at the broom. It does not hurt the newest comer to sweep out the office if necessary. I was one of those sweepers myself.Assuming that you have all obtained employment and are fairly started, my advice to you is “aim high”. I would not give a fig the young man who does not aly see himself the partner or the head of an important firm.Do not rest content a moment in your thoughts as head clerk, or eman, or general manager in any concern, no matter how extensive. Say to yourself, “My place is at the top.” Be king in your dreams. And here is the prime condition of success, the great secret concentrate your energy, thought, and capital exclusively upon the business in which you are engaged. Having begun in one line, resolve to fight it out on that line, to lead in it, adopt every improvement, have the best machinery, and know the most about it.The concerns which fail are those which havescatteredtheir capital, which means that they have scattered their brains also. They have investments in this, or that, or the other, here there, and everywhere. “Don’tput all your eggs in one basket.” is all wrong. I tell you to “put all your eggs in one basket, and then watch that basket.” Look round you and take notice, men who do that not often fail. It is easy to watch and carry the one basket. It is trying to carry too many baskets that breaks most eggs in this country. He who carries three baskets must put one on his head, which is apt to tumble and trip him up.One fault of the American businessman is lack of concentration. To summarize what I have said aim the highest; never enter a bar room; do not touch liquor, or if at all only at meals; neverspeculate; never indorse beyond your surplus cash fund; make the firm’s interest yours; break orders always to save owners; concentrate; put all your eggs in one basket, and watch that basket; expenditure always within revenue; lastly, be not impatient, as Emerson says, “no one can cheat you out of ultimate success but yourselves.” 751。

The Microscopic Technique Each advance in microscopic technique has provided scientists with new perspectives on the function of living organisms and the nature of matter itself. The invention of the visible light microscope late in the sixteenth century introduced a previously unknown realm of single celled plants and animals. In the twentieth century, electron microscopes have provided direct views of viruses and minuscule surface structures. Now another type of microscope, one that utilizes x rays rather than light or electrons, offers a different way of examining tiny details; it should extend human perception still farther into the natural world. The dream of building an x ray microscope dates to back 1895; its development, however was virtually halted in the 190's because the development of the electron microscope was progressing rapidly. During the 190's, electron microscopes routinely achieved resolution better than that poss ible with a visible light microscope, while the permance of x ray microscopes resisted improvement. In recent years, however, interest in x ray microscopes has revived, largely because of advances such as thedevelopment of new sources of x ray illumination. As a result, the brightness available today is millions of times tha t of x ray tubes, which, most of the century, were the only available sources of soft x rays. The new x ray microscopes considerably improve on the resolution provided by optical microscopes. They can also be used to map the distribution of certain chemical elements. Some can m pictures in extremely short times; others hold the promise of special capabilities such as three dimensional imaging. Unlike conventional electron microscope, x ray microscope enables specimens to be kept in air and in water, which means that biological samples can be studied under conditions similar to their natural state. The illumination used, so called soft x rays in the wavelength range of twenty to ty angstroms (an angstrom is one ten billionth of a meter), is also sufficiently penetrating to image intact biological cells in ma ny cases. Because of the wavelength of the x rays used, soft x ray microscopes will never match the highest resolution possible with electron microscopes. Rather, their special properties will make possible investigations that will complement those permed with light and electron based instruments. 6。
