There are plenty of foods that are either named after places or are assumed to come from certain places. The following is a list of certain food origins that we#39;re frequently wrong about. 10.German Chocolate Cake10. German chocolate cake is delicious, but its name is lying to you; it#39;s not German at all. It was named after a German, though: a man named Sam German. He didn#39;t invent the cake itself, but back in 1852, he created a chocolate bar. It was different from normal chocolate (at the time) because it was made for cooking, and it came to be called Baker#39;s German Sweet Chocolate. The first time the recipe for this cake was published was way back in the late #39;50s. It was advertised in a Dallas newspaper and became popular almost immediately. The demand for German#39;s baking chocolate skyrocketed, and his name became synonymous with the dessert. 9.Baked Alaska9. The Baked Alaska dessert was actually invented in New York City, most likely in 1868—the same year the US purchased Alaska from Russia. Charles Ranhofer, the chef who named it, called it Baked Alaska to cash in on the fame of the recently completed deal. It was considered a luxury at the time, since making ice cream in the 1860s was a laborious process and wasn#39;t yet mechanized. 8.French Dip8. The French dip sandwich, perhaps unsurprisingly, isn#39;t from France. It was invented at Phillipe#39;s in Los Angeles, in 1918. The first sandwich of its kind came about by accident. The restaurant#39;s namesake, Phillipe Mathieu, was making a sandwich for a police officer when he accidentally dropped the roll into hot oil. The officer (supposedly named French) bought it anyway. He loved it so much that he returned the next day with his friends and they all ordered their rolls dipped in oil. Another restaurant in the area, Cole#39;s Pacific Electric Buffet, also claim the invention of the French dip. In their version, they dipped the b in jus (like au jus) to make it softer for a customer that was on her way back from a dentist#39;s appointment. 7.Coney Dog7. The Coney dog may be attributed to Coney Island, but its true origins lie a few states west: Michigan. Much like the French dip, the exact origin is unknown, as there are three different eateries that claim they invented the iconic dog. All three restaurants are located in Michigan. So there you have it. While we can#39;t be sure of the exact origin, we know it#39;s definitely not from New York. 6.Curry Powder6. The curry powder we know today is nothing like the original spice it was supposed to mimic. It was heavily influenced by the British, and in India it isn#39;t even referred to as curry. They call it masala, and there are many different varieties. The curry powder we know best is what the British produced when they tried to replicate the flavors they encountered in traditional Indian cooking. True Indian curry powder is custom-made to accompany whatever food is being prepared. 翻译:冯璐 前十网 /201507/384457A man was walking in the street when he heard a voice:有一名男子正走在街上的时候听到一个声音:;Stop!Stand still! If you take one more step,a brick will fall down on your head and kill you.;“停! The man stopped and a big brick fell right in front of him. The man was astonished . He went on,and after a while he was going to cross the road. Stop!Stand still! If you take one more step a car will over you and you will die.;“停! The man did as he was instructed,这名男子因为曾被指示过,所以就照着做,just as a car came careening around the corner, barely missing him. ;Where are you? ; the man asked,;Who are you? 你是谁?”;I am your guardian angle,; the voice answered. …”;Oh yeah?; the man asked.;And where the hell were you when I got married?;这名男子问说:“喔,是吗? /201503/361466Thousands of parents are naming their babies after Downton Abbey characters, new figures have revealed. The TV show#39;s huge popularity has inspired a resurgence of 1920s fashion and hairstyles, and now the old-fashioned names of its characters are also back in vogue. Edith, Cora, Sybil and Elsie are all soaring in popularity among new parents. But when the show began in 2010, the monikers were in danger of dwindling into obscurity. It is now just finished its fifth season running on Sunday night attracting around eight million viewers per episode. Violet, the first name of the matriarchal Dowager Countess of Grantham played by Dame Maggie Smith, has seen a particularly large comeback after it made the top 100 girls#39; names for 2013. Spiralling from 466 girls in 2010 to 709 last year, it has jumped in the national rankings from 123rd to 78th.2010年有466名女孩取名为“维奥莱特”,去年这个数字上升为709名。 And highest of all was Elsie, the Christian name of housekeeper Mrs Hughes, which has rocketed into the thousands in just five years. Nearly 1,200 babies took the name last year compared to 535 in 2010. Parenting expert Dr Fin Williams, who founded the group Parent Perspectives based in Devon, was unsurprised by the trend. She said: #39;We pick up our preferences for names based on who we are surrounded by but also our experiences of TV characters who have that name. #39;We are less likely to name our children after someone who we feel hasn#39;t got a very nice character, and more likely to name them after somebody we aspire to.#39;“我们很少用品行不端的人的名字来给孩子命名。 Cora, the warm-hearted countess of Grantham, and Sybil, her pretty and modest daughter, are among the names that have rocketed. The figures, released by the Office of National Statistics, show a 55 per cent increase in the number of girls called Cora in England and Wales, while there are now treble the number of Sybils than there were in 2010. The name Mary - the lead character of the show played by Michelle Dockery - has bucked the trend with a slight decline - just 203 girls were given the name in 2013, compared to 237 in 2010. The top names for 2013 were Oliver and Amelia, followed by Olivia, Emily, Ava and Isla, and Jack, Harry, Jacob and Charlie.2013年最受欢迎的名字顺次为奥利弗(Oliver)和阿米莉亚(Amelia)、奥利维亚(Olivia)、艾米莉(Emily)、伊娃(Ava)、伊斯拉(Isla)、杰克(Jack)、哈利(Harry)、雅各布(Jacob)和查理(Charlie)。 /201412/347303

There’s nothing worse than a rich person who’s chronically angry or unhappy. There’s really no excuse for it, yet I see this phenomenon every day. It results from an extremely unbalanced life, one with too much expectation and not enough appreciation for what’s there. 原文发表于Entrepreneur.com网站。Without gratitude and appreciation for what you aly have, you’ll never know true fulfillment. But how do you cultivate balance in life? What’s the point of achievement if your life has no balance? For nearly four decades, I’ve had the privilege of coaching people from every walk of life, including some of the most powerful men and women on the planet. I’ve worked with presidents of the ed States as well as owners of small businesses. Across the board, I’ve found that virtually every moment people make three key decisions that dictate the quality of their lives. If you make these decisions unconsciously, you’ll end up like majority of people who tend to be out of shape physically, exhausted emotionally and often financially stressed. But if you make these decisions consciously, you can literally change the course of your life today. Decision 1: Carefully choose what to focus on. At every moment, millions of things compete for your attention. You can focus on things that are happening right here and now or on what you want to create in the future. Or you can focus on the past. Where focus goes, energy flows. What you focus on and your pattern for doing so shapes your entire life. Which area do you tend to focus on more: what you have or what’s missing from your life? I’m sure you think about both sides of this coin. But if you examine your habitual thoughts, what do you tend to spend most of your time dwelling on? Rather than focusing on what you don’t have and begrudging those who are better off than you financially, perhaps you should acknowledge that you have much to be grateful for and some of it has nothing to do with money. You can be grateful for your health, family, friends, opportunities and mind. Developing a habit of appreciating what you have can create a new level of emotional well-being and wealth. But the real question is, do you take time to deeply feel grateful with your mind, body, heart and soul? That’s where the joy, happiness and fulfillment can be found. Consider a second pattern of focus that affects the quality of your life: Do you tend to focus more on what you can control or what you can’t? If you focus on what you can’t control, you’ll have more stress in life. You can influence many aspects of your life but you usually can’t control them. When you adopt this pattern of focus, your brain has to make another decision:如果你着重的是自己无法控制的事物,生活中就要承受更多的压力。 Decision 2: Figure out, What does this all mean? Ultimately, how you feel about your life has nothing to do with the events in it or with your financial condition or what has (or hasn’t) happened to you. The quality of your life is controlled by the meaning you give these things. Most of the time you may be unaware of the effect of your unconscious mind in assigning meaning to life’s events. When something happens that disrupts your life (a car accident, a health issue, a job loss), do you tend to think that this is the end or the beginning? If someone confronts you, is that person insulting you, coaching you or truly caring for you? Does a devastating problem mean that God is punishing you or challenging you? Or is it possible that this problem is a gift from God? Your life takes on whatever meaning you give it. With each meaning comes a unique feeling or emotion and the quality of your life involves where you live emotionally. I always ask during my seminars, “How many of you know someone who is on antidepressants and still depressed?” Typically 85 percent to 90 percent of those assembled raise their hands. How is this possible? The drugs should make people feel better. It’s true that antidepressants do come with labels warning that suicidal thoughts are a possible side effect. But no matter how much a person drugs himself, if he constantly focuses on what he can’t control in life and what’s missing, he won’t find it hard to despair. If he adds to that a meaning like “life is not worth living,” that’s an emotional cocktail that no antidepressant can consistently overcome. Yet if that same person can arrive at a new meaning, a reason to live or a belief that all this was meant to be, then he will be stronger than anything that ever happened to him. When people shift their habitual focus and meanings, there’s no limit on what life can become. A change of focus and a shift in meaning can literally alter someone’s biochemistry in minutes. So take control and always remember: Meaning equals emotion and emotion equals life. Choose consciously and wisely. Find an empowering meaning in any event, and wealth in its deepest sense will be yours today. Once you create a meaning in your mind, it creates an emotion, and that emotion leads to a state for making your third decision:一旦你在心里创建了一个意义,就相当于创建了一种情绪,而这个情绪可以将你引向第三个决定:Decision 3: What will you do? The actions you take are powerfully shaped by the emotional state you’re in. If you’re angry, you’re going to behave quite differently than if you’re feeling playful or outrageous. If you want to shape your actions, the fastest way is to change what you focus on and shift the meaning to be something more empowering. Two people who are angry will behave differently. Some pull back. Others push through. Some individuals express anger quietly. Others do so loudly or violently. Yet others suppress it only to look for a passive-aggressive opportunity to regain the upper hand or even exact revenge. Where do these patterns come from? People tend to model their behavior on those they respect, enjoy and love. The people who frustrated or angered you? You often reject their approaches. Yet far too often you may find yourself falling back into patterns you witnessed over and over again in your youth and were displeased by. It’s very useful for you to become aware of your patterns when you are frustrated, angry or sad or feel lonely. You can’t change your patterns if you’re not aware of them. Now that you’re aware of the power of these three decisions, start looking for role models who are experiencing what you want out of life. I promise you that those who have passionate relationships have a totally different focus and arrive at totally different meanings for the challenges in relationships than people who are constantly bickering or fighting. It’s not rocket science. If you become aware of the differences in how people approach these three decisions, you’ll have a pathway to help you create a permanent positive change in any area of life.

What are you doing in there?” So shouts my wife after I’ve spent getting on for 40 minutes in the bathroom. “I’m, er, exfoliating,” I call back merrily, while walking my fingers along the pots and potions crowding the windowsill. Holy Saint Francis, as Friar Laurence puts it in Romeo and Juliet, what a change is here!“你在里面折腾啥呢?” And not just here: men’s beauty products — moisturisers supposedly optimised for male skin and sold in butch-yet-metrosexual tubs in science-fictional silvers and blacks — have been undergoing a boom. According to Mintel, sales of men’s skincare products rose last year to #163;95.1m, up from #163;85.4m in 2012, and are forecast to reach #163;96.2m in 2014. Men also appear to be hell-bent on not just washing but “cleansing”, not just rubbing but “gently massaging”, on introducing the skin not just to water, but to a very superior scientific product called “aqua” And — that holy grail, that precise incantation marking the line where the marketing departments of cosmetics companies fought the Advertising Standards Authority to a standstill — on “reducing the appearance of wrinkles”. The comforting idea that, as men age, they become more attractive seems not to be endorsed here; anti-ageing is the thing. The holy trinity of Tom Ford’s bumf, for instance, is: “Deep clean, soothe and rejuvenate.” My grooming regime used to consist of the following. Get into shower. Rub head and shoulders with Head amp; Shoulders, yodelling happily the while. Rub rest of self with Head amp; Shoulders too, owing to Boots not yet offering for sale a competitively-priced product called Armpits amp; Undercarriage. Step from the shower, dandruff-free from top to toe. Towel hair and body. Shave with slightly blunt razor and squirt of Gillette foam. Rinse face. Get dressed. I appraise myself in the mirror from time to time, but not much. Like a lot of men, I am quite vain about my lack of vanity. This is a sore point with my wife, who has long campaigned against stubble and fluffy, product-free hair, but over the years, alcohol, and fags, and toughing out skin that chaps so much in cold weather that my fingers hurt when I type and if I smile, blood runs on to my chin#8201;.#8201;.#8201;.#8201;well, they’ve taken their toll. I’m 40. Spring chickens do not buttonhole me in the street with: “Mon semblable! Mon frère!”. However, my regime for the past few weeks has consisted of some variant on the following. Get into shower. Rub self with Alexandra Soveral for Men Green Tea and Lime Hair and Body Wash (#163;35), yodelling happily. Clean face using Kiehl’s Oil Eliminator Cleanser (#163;19), and Clarisonic Aria Advanced Sonic Cleansing brush (#163;155). Rub cheeks with Foreo Luna’s pre-shave vibrating cleanser for men (#163;145). Pat down cheeks with Nurse Jamie EGF Platinum Shave Oil (#163;205) before shaving with slightly blunt razor. Apply Sisleyum For Men anti-ageing aftershave (#163;165). Apply Tom Ford For Men Hydrating Lip Balm (#163;20) to lips. Apply 111 Skin Celestial Black Diamond Eye Cream (#163;170) around eyes. Squirt a thin orangey gwibble of NuBo Cell Dynamic Bio-Gold Essence (#163;380) into palm and rub it on cheeks and forehead. Follow up with Nurse Jamie EGF Platinum 7 Face + Neck Daily Moisturiser (#163;510, I repeat, #163;510 for 50g). Wonder about slapping on one of the six or seven other moisturisers I have, then think, “Nah. Wouldn’t want to go over the top, would I?” Men Green Tea and Lime Hair and Body Wash(男士有机绿茶与洗发沐浴露 售价35英镑)。 涂抹其它六七种润肤霜时不禁会这样想:“算了,会不会抹多了呢?”That is not to mention, by the way, the evening’s jollities: the mud masks and the cooling night-creams, applied with darling little spatulas; the actual glass ampoules of Dr Barbara Sturm’s Molecular Cosmetics Hyaluronic Acid Ampoules (#163;132 for 7 x 2ml) that I crack open to apply some clear oil (Molecular cosmetics! Cosmetics made of real molecules!) to my uncared-for face. I am acquainted, now, with peptides and eucalyptus oil. I am the fearless absorber of Argireline, the immortal beneficiary of Pitera#8482; and Clusterin. As regime change goes, all things considered, this makes Baghdad 2003 look conservative. Now I have not been resistant, hitherto, to using men’s beauty products because I associate them with effeminacy. I’m just fine with effeminacy. Mostly I’ve avoided them on the more concrete grounds that I think they are a con, and a pretentious con at that. I feel irritated by their barely literate marketing guff (“Terre d’Hermès is a symbolic narrative revolving around a raw material and its metamorphosis#8201;.#8201;.#8201;.#8201;”), their modish ingredients, their stratospheric price tags and their essential sameness: strip out all the pseudoscience and here is (three times in four) a nice-smelling white goo that will make your face slightly greasy for about an hour or two. My theory runs that skin is, basically, waterproof: that’s why we don’t all go like a toilet roll dropped in the bath when we get caught in the rain. And since skin is waterproof, trying to force moisture into it from the outside is the errand of a halfwit, when it is both cost-free and much easier to put the moisture on the inside, in the form of a glass of water. It’s a theory to which I still hold, for the most part. And the first time I put on a Tom Ford For Men Intensive Purifying Mud Mask (#163;45) — and felt my skin go as tight as if I’d smeared haemorrhoid ointment all over my fizzog, then watched my black face dry to a Smurf-like cobalt blue, with the blocked pores on my nose picked out like seeds on a strawberry#8201;.#8201;.#8201;.#8201;it was, well. It was a novelty, I’ll give it that. But I have to confess that my experiment with a grooming regime that would cause American Psycho’s Patrick Bateman to look on in — I fancy — a respectful hush has not been wasted. Lord knows, you have to be not only cash-rich but time-rich to go through with all this palaver every morning; some of us have children to get to school and wives who need to shower. But I did, actually, quite enjoy it. That eye cream is quite soothing, whether or not — and my money’s on not — the black diamonds have any measurable dermatological effect. I loved the cool gloopiness of Kiehl’s facial exfoliator, with its gritty particles of something glittery suspended in the gel. I even quite liked the musky mineral pong of that unbearably up-itself Terre d’Hermès aftershave (#163;47). The Guerlain Super Aqua-Crème — it comes in a day gel (#163;70) and a night balm (#163;81) in pretty blue pots — is very pleasant and not at all greasy-feeling; better, for my money, than the sinisterly gelid boiled-down-horses-hooves consistency of that Platinum moisturiser. I can’t say I’ve ever had much time for shaving oil, even if it is dispensed with Nurse Jamie’s pseudo-medical eye-dropper — you always need more of it than advertised — and it does nothing that good old shaving foam doesn’t. NuBo Cell Dynamic Bio-Gold Essence is a not-very-nice-smelling orangey goop. But it’s possible that I’m unconsciously biased against these products on the grounds that they seem the most intelligence-insultingly expensive of all I tried. And, fair’s fair, the products may not be my idea of a priority for disposable income but they do have some effect. Deep clean? Sure. Soothe? Definitely. Rejuvenate? That’s probably too much to ask of even real science: I have three children under six so I look how I feel, which is 104 years old. Nevertheless, at least for the first few hours of every day, and probably thereafter, my skin — my now nice-smelling skin — did feel as smooth as the proverbial baby’s bottom. I can vouch for this because I did a comparison with my actual baby’s actual bottom, which is moisturised with Diprobase (#163;9.99 for 500g). Sisleyum For Men Anti-Age aftershave #163;165希思黎男士抗衰老乳液165英镑Tom Ford for Men Hydrating Lip Balm #163;20汤姆#8226;福特的男用保湿润唇膏20英镑111 Skin Celestial Black Diamond Eye Cream #163;170111 Skin的Celestial Black Diamond Eye Cream眼膏170英镑NuBo Cell Dynamic Bio-Gold Essence #163;380NuBo Cell Dynamic Bio-Gold Essence精华素380英镑Nurse Jamie EGF Platinum 7 Moisturiser #163;510杰米护士的白金款脸颈部日用润肤霜510英镑Dr Barbara Sturm Hyaluronic Acid Ampoules #163;132Dr Barbara Sturm透明质酸脸精华液安瓿瓶132英镑Tom Ford for Men Mud Mask #163;45汤姆#8226;福特男士深层清透泥面膜45英镑Terre d’Hermès Aftershave #163;47剃须后抹的爱马仕大地情人香水47英镑Guerlain Super Aqua-Crème Day Gel #163;70娇兰特效水凝清爽保湿日霜70英镑Guerlain Super Aqua-Crème Night Balm #163;81娇兰特效水凝清爽保湿晚霜81英镑Alexandra Soveral Hair and Body Wash #163;35Alexandra Soveral的男士洗发沐浴露35英镑Total #163;2,179总计:2179英镑 /201501/353570

Women apologize more often than men do, a new study showed。 But it#39;s not that men are reluctant to admit wrongdoings, the study showed. It#39;s just that they have a higher threshold for what they think warrants reparation. When the researchers looked at the number of apologies relative to the number of offenses the participants perceived they had committed, the researchers saw no differences between the genders。 Study researcher Karina Schumann and her colleagues conducted two studies to see if genders do indeed differ in how often they apologize, and if so, why this might be。 In one, 33 university students aged 18 to 44 kept an online dairy for 12 days documenting whether they apologized or did something they thought required an apology, even if they didn#39;t actually say they were sorry. They also kept track of how often they felt someone had committed an offensive act against them that warranted an apology。 Women apologized more and reported committing more offensive acts, but both men and women apologized about 81 percent of the time when they deemed their actions offensive。 81%。In the second study, 120 undergraduates rated how severe they thought a particular offensive was. For instance, they had to imagine they woke their friend up late at night, and because of the sleep disturbance, the friend did poorly on an interview the next day. Women rated the offenses as more severe than men did, and women were also more likely to say the friend deserved an apology。 Women might have a lower threshold for what requires an apology because they are more concerned with the emotional experiences of others and in promoting harmony in their relationships, Schumann speculated。 Recognizing that men and women may perceive situations differently may help the genders to get along。 The studies, detailed in the journal Psychological Science Online, were small and involved only university students, so the findings might not be applicable to all men and women in general。 /201507/384640
